Review: The Trouble with Mistletoe by Jill Shalvis

The Trouble with Mistletoe (Heartbreaker Bay #2)
by Jill Shalvis
Publication: September 27, 2016
Source: Own Copy

28446375If she has her way …

Willa Davis is wrangling puppies when Keane Winters stalks into her pet shop with frustration in his chocolate-brown eyes and a pink bedazzled cat carrier in his hand. He needs a kitty sitter, stat. But the last thing Willa needs is to rescue a guy who doesn’t even remember her …

He’ll get nothing but coal in his stocking.

Saddled with his great-aunt’s Feline from Hell, Keane is desperate to leave her in someone else’s capable hands. But in spite of the fact that he’s sure he’s never seen the drop-dead-gorgeous pet shop owner before, she seems to be mad at him …

Unless he tempers “naughty” with a special kind of nice …

Willa can’t deny that Keane’s changed since high school: he’s less arrogant, for one thing—but can she trust him not to break her heart again? It’s time to throw a coin in the fountain, make a Christmas wish—and let the mistletoe do its work …

percy-klein

Surprise, surprise, it’s another review for another book by Jill Shalvis lol. If you didn’t already know this, I am currently obsessed with her Heartbreaker Bay series.  I obviously can’t get enough and The Trouble with Mistletoe was a WONDERFUL addition to the series.

Willa Davis is the owner of the South Bark Mutt Shop, located in the courtyard of the Pacific Pier Building. Willa and I are kindred spirits, because the one thing she loves just as much as the animals she takes care of, is Christmas. It is Christmas time in San Francisco and she has decked out her entire store in decorations. Everything seems to be going great until early one morning Keane Winters pops up at her store’s door, looking for help. The same Keane Winters who, in high school stood her up at the Sadie Hawkins dance and now doesn’t seem to remember her at all.

Keane is not having the easiest time when he shows up at Willa’s store. His great-aunt has left her cat for him to take care of and Petunia, or P.I.T.A. short for “pain in the ass”, the nickname he has given her, is making his life hell. While his situation is not ideal, meeting Willa, as a result, definitely makes it a little better. Except, he doesn’t know why she is so irritated when she sees him every time he drops Petunia off at South Bark.

Willa and Keane. Ugh, their relationship is equal parts adorable and super freaking steamy. I loved that Willa was snippy and a smartass towards Keane in the beginning even though his reactions and responses really showed that he wasn’t going anywhere when Willa tries to keep her distance. Keane was a wonderful mix of rugged and sweet with his own quirks like his fear of heights even though he works on flipping housed for a living. He gets major points in my book for his persistence and understanding as well as his ability to dirty up any conversation. 😉

Overall, this is my second favorite book in the series and it has fueled my need to read every book even more. If you like second chance romances with cute banter, some definite steam, and amazing side characters, then pick up The Trouble with Mistletoe.

**Oh, also, I HIGHLY recommend watching the movie adaptation made by Passionflix. Definitely, check that out if you want a spot on adaptation and to see Willa and Keane come to life.

About the Author

_21A6258_pp-fb.jpg

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

Waiting on Wednesday [3]

This is a meme hosted by Jill from Breaking the Spine where every Wednesday bloggers showcase a book that they are eagerly waiting for!

The Upside of Being Single
by Emma Hart
Release Date: January 30, 2018

37420706If anyone asks, I knew better than to flash my boobs for Mardi Gras beads.

I still don’t know why I did it.
Maybe it was the dare from my two best friends.
Maybe it was the guys on the balcony saying they’d throw Fireball shots with the beads.
Or maybe it was the quiet guy in the corner of that same balcony with piercing gray eyes, wavy dark hair, and a smile so tempting I wanted to climb up there and lick it off his face.
Maybe it was because I never thought I’d see them again.
Not that it matters. Not today.
Because the hotel I manage was finally bought—and the guy who walks in and introduces himself as my new boss is Mr. Tall, Dark, and Silent.

There are many upsides to being single.
Your new boss knowing what your boobs look like?
Not one of them.

(THE UPSIDE TO BEING SINGLE is a standalone, romantic comedy from the author who brought you MISS FIX-IT and BEING BROOKE.)

After seeing the cover reveal on Book Twin Reviews, which by the way is ABSOLUTELY stunning, I knew I wanted to read this. When I read the blurb for it, it just made me want to get my hands on it more. This romantic comedy looks like a lot of fun and Emma Hart is an author that I haven’t read before which is great as I am trying to discover more new authors this year. Thankfully, I won’t have to wait for long but the end of January still seems so far away right now lol.

2018 Reading Goals

Happy New Year!

Now that it is officially 2018, it is time for me to make my reading goals for the year. Since I failed miserably in completing the goals I made for myself, I made sure to make REASONABLE reading goals for this year and I think I managed to do it!

Here are the 8 reading goals I came up with:

1. Read 60 books this year.

I managed to read 52 books in 2017 so setting my overall reading goal to read 60 books doesn’t seem like it will be too hard. I already know I have a ton of books to review in January so I don’t think this will be a problem to accomplish. Fingers crossed.

2. Read 10 new-to-me authors.

I discovered some amazing authors last year like Kate Meader and Harper Sloan so I want to continue to discover more. There are so many romance authors I have heard about and I have yet to read their books. That is going to change especially since I own books by these authors!

Here are some authors I want to get to this year:

-Vi Keeland

-Emma Scott

-Amy Harmon

-Krista and Becca Ritchie

-Brittany C. Cherry

-Rachel Van Dyken

-Kennedy Fox

-R.S. Grey

-A.L. Jackson

-Meghan March

-Mia Sheridan

Nalini Singh

-Kandi Steiner

-T.M. Frazier

-Mariana Zapata

3. Read 5 new series.

I set this at 10 last year and that was a HUGE mistake because I think I read maybe two series. This year, I am going to pick three series that I know I want to read and go from there since I will probably discover new series this year along the way.

The series I want to read:

The Others series by Anne Bishop

Born In trilogy by Nora Roberts

All Souls trilogy by Deborah Harkness

Unknown

4. Re-read/Finish three series.

This is another goal that I set for 10 last year and I can tell you I didn’t accomplish this at all. So, this year I have lowered it to three because that is much more reasonable.

Here are the series I want to re-read/finish:

The Chicagoland Vampire series by Chloe Neill

Unknown-8(photo credit: chloeneill.com)

Dare to Love series by Carly Phillips

Unknown-9(photo credit: carlyphillips.com)

Reign of Secrets series by Jennifer Anne Davis

5. Read 15 or more books on my bookshelf.

2017 was the year of constant book buying for me and as a result, I now have about 100 books that don’t fit on my bookshelf. So, one way to make room is to start reading the books on my bookshelf. Only the books I really liked or loved are going to stay on my bookshelf once I have read so I need to start reading and see how many fit that category.

6. Catch up on NetGalley TBR.

My NetGalley TBR has not only been neglected but has also gotten a bit out of hand so I am hoping to read some of the books on there so as to make it much more manageable.

7. Read more outside of romance genre-wise.

If you couldn’t surmise from the name of my blog, I LOVE romance and therefore mostly read romance. But, I do like reading other genres like young adult, fantasy, and mystery/thrillers so I want to get back to those genres this year. The series I have picked to read or re-read/finish will definitely help with that.

8. Unhaul books/e-books that I know I won’t read.

As was mentioned above, I have accumulated a very large number of books in 2017 and those are just the physical books, don’t get me started on the status of my e-books. But a huge goal this year is to de-clutter my life and that includes the books I own. So, I am going to be going through my books and e-books and getting rid of the ones I know I won’t read. It is going to be a long process since I have about 1,000 books (physical and e-books combined) but it is absolutely necessary since I have no room left on my bookshelf.

Those are my reading goals for 2018!

What reading goals have you set for 2018?

Tell me down below in the comments!

2017 Wrap Up

So, this was going to be about looking back at the reading goals I made in 2017 and seeing if I accomplished any of them but… I TOTALLY bombed.

Instead, here is my year in books according to Goodreads.

Overall, I am actually happy with the reading I did in 2017. Do I wish I could have read more books? Of course! But I managed to read a book a week which is pretty good given the fact that I am also in my last year of grad school.

How about you guys?
Did you reach the goals you set for yourself?

Favorite Books of 2017

The Heartbreaker Bay series is one of my favorite series I have read this year.
Accidentally on Purpose
is actually my favorite read of the year but The Trouble with Mistletoe was also amazing and I LOVED the movie.

Another series I discovered this year that I absolutely fell in love with is the Chicago Rebels series. Kate Meader is a new favorite author for me and I can’t wait to read more of her books. If you like hockey romances, you NEED to pick this series up.

35663675

And… the award for my favorite cover goes to this gorgeous book.
Add in the fact that it was an adorable and equally steamy second chance romance
co-written by one of my all-time favorite authors who brought me one of my favorite book boyfriends of the year and you bet I was one happy girl.

Unknown-1

Harper Sloan is another author I discovered this year and I am SO GLAD that I did.
The Coming Home series is one I plan on finishing in the new year because this series has ignited my love for cowboy romances.

34346381

A new favorite romance sub-genre of mine this year was M/M romance and it is ALL because of this M/M sports romance. I can’t wait to read more books like this in 2018.

Unknown

Not only was this such a cute marriage of convenience romance with a gorgeous Irish hero but the heroine was also super relatable.

Unknown-3

This was such a wonderful surprise!
I loved it so much I actually re-read a few months after the first time I read it.
If you are looking for a cute romantic comedy that will make you smile, pick this up.

Unknown-4

This is probably the steamiest read of the year for me and I LOVED every second of it.
I ended up buying the entire series after reading this because I knew I would love it.
This is another series I intend to finish in 2018.

So, this is the first time I have ever reviewed an anthology before and it just so happens to be the longest anthology I have ever seen. But, I couldn’t pass up the chance since it is an anthology of all sports romance novellas AND they take place during Christmas time. Two of my favorite things 😄.

There are eleven stories, which means if I provided a review for all of them this blog post would go on FOREVER, so I am going to pick out a few stories I really liked and review those just so you get a taste. Overall, I really enjoyed this anthology even if it was MASSIVE and would say that any sports romance lover should pick it up. The novellas are wonderful and it gave me a chance to discover new authors as well.

4 stars

Out of Formation by Elle Fox

This is a football novella that involves a cheerleader and the newest head coach of a college football team. I absolutely LOVED the older man/younger woman element to the story especially since the two main characters, Elena and Colin have a history. The story flashes back so you get to see their relationship from earlier on which I really liked as some events happen that have shaken up their connection to one another. My only complaint is that I wish we saw more of the sport in the story since this is a sports romance anthology. But, the epilogue gave me all the feels making this one of my favorites out of the whole bunch. Elle Fox is also a new author for me and after reading this, I will definitely be checking more of her books out.

Yard Sale by Charleigh Rose

I am no stranger to Charleigh Rose (I loved Stepdaddy Savage!), so when I saw she was one of the authors in this anthology I was excited to read her novella. It is a snowboarding novella which is a sports romance that I have not read about before and it only further confirmed that I will continue to read Charleigh Rose’s books. Cam and Mollie meet one night at a bar during the summer and the sparks fly immediately. After a steamy one-night stand, the two part ways until they come face to face with one another five months later. The reconnection isn’t as wonderful as Mollie has a secret she has been keeping from Cam since their night together. This was another one of my favorites because of the chemistry that Cam and Mollie had from the very beginning and the adorable ending that also gave me all the feels. I also loved the change-up in the sport that was featured in this novella. I am so used to reading about hockey or football so it was nice to see the hero who was a medal-winning snowboarder.

Sin Bin by Mandi Beck

Mandi Beck is another new-to-me author and her hockey novella was not only super steamy but also sweet and so much fun to read. It features an older man/ younger woman which I have already mentioned is something I love so that only added to my enjoyment of this novella. Jason and Stella meet when Jason, an NHL hockey player, decides to visit his alma mater and he spots Stella, a talented softball player at the school. Let’s just say that Jason set his sights on Stella and would do another to have her. Though he is older, Stella had no problem reciprocating those feelings and the two share a rather hot moment in the penalty box. I highly recommend this one for those who love hockey sports romances as well as strong, independent female main characters.

Switch Hitter by Sara Ney

Sara Ney has been on my radar for quite a long time, I own the first book in her How to Date a Douchebag series, so I was excited to finally be able to read something by her and boy, did she write one entertaining novella. This is a baseball novella involving Amelia whose twin sister pleads for her to pretend to be her on a date she made with a baseball player, Dash, at their college because she overbooked for the evening lol. Talk about an interesting premise. I don’t think I have read anything like this and it was so much fun. It’s told in dual POV so you also get Dash’s, or Dante’s perspective and it is so funny to read when he notices things about Lucy aka Amelia that were different from when they went out previously. Dante is also Latino and oh so sexy but also respectful that my heart didn’t know what to do with itself. Oh, and don’t get me started about when he and Amelia talk to each other in Spanish *swoon*. Baseball sports romances are not something I usually read because baseball is not my favorite sport, but boy did I really like this one.

It was then that she graduated to writing her stories on her phone and then finally on a proper computer.

Emma Scott:

I write romances with flawed characters, characters with artistic hearts: builders, poets, and writers of various makes and models. I love to write book lovers; those who have found refuge, companionship, and escape in books, much as we do in real life. I like realism, honesty, authenticity in storytelling. I love to write about enduring love, soul-deep love, in as real a setting as I can make, but with big smooshy HEAs. I believe in diversity, open-mindedness, and inclusion. I like sweetness mixed with steam, love conquering all, and above all, hope. Love always wins.

Meghan Quinn:

A BLONDE AT HEART

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.

Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.

Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Rochelle Paige is the Amazon bestselling author of nineteen books. She absolutely adores reading and her friends growing up used to tease her when she trailed after them, trying to read and walk at the same time. Meet the authors:

LJ Shen

L.J. Shen is an International #1 best-selling author of Contemporary Romance and New Adult novels. She lives in Northern California with her husband, young son and chubby cat.

Before she’d settled down, L.J. (who thinks referring to herself in the third person is really silly, by the way) traveled the world, and collected friends from all across the globe. Friends who’d be happy to report that she is a rubbish companion, always forgets people’s birthdays and never sends Christmas cards.

She enjoys the simple things in life, like spending time with her family and friends, reading, HBO, Netflix and internet-stalking Stephen James. She reads between three to five books a week and firmly believes Crocs shoes and mullets should be outlawed.

Kennedy Ryan:

Kennedy Ryan is a Southern girl gone Southern California. A Top 100 Amazon Bestseller, Kennedy writes romance about remarkable women who find a way to thrive even in tough times, the love they find, and the men who cherish them.

She is a wife to her lifetime lover and mother to an extraordinary son. She has always leveraged her journalism background to write for charity and non-profit organizations, but enjoys writing to raise Autism awareness most. A contributor for Modern Mom Magazine, Kennedy’s writings have appeared in Chicken Soup for the Soul, USA Today and many others. The founder and executive director of a foundation serving Georgia families living with Autism, Kennedy has appeared on Headline News, Montel Williams, NPR and other outlets as a voice for families living with autism.

Adriana Locke:

A contemporary romance author running on coffee and sticky kisses from my rowdy four little boys.

From Indiana, I’m a true Mid-Westerner. Life, for me, is about family, faith, and food. When I’m not running my kiddos around or having a lunch date of fajitas with my husband (and high school sweetheart), you can find me outside. I love a good sunny day almost as much as I love candy, random quotes, and steamy bad boys in fantastic books.

I’m on nearly every social media platform. Please find me on the ones you frequent – I love chatting with readers.

Mandi Beck:

Mandi Beck has been an avid reader all of her life. A deep love for books always had her jotting down little stories on napkins, notebooks, and her hand. As an adult she was further submerged into the book world through book clubs and the epicness of social media. It was then that she graduated to writing her stories on her phone and then finally on a proper computer.

A nursing student, mother to two rambunctious and somewhat rotten boys, and stepmom to two great girls away at college, she shares her time with her husband in Chicago where she was born and raised. Mandi is a diehard hockey fan and blames the Blackhawks when her deadlines are not met.

Charleigh Rose
:

We are a duo of an international best-selling author and a blogger who teamed up to write the taboo, thought-provoking stories we want our audience to have–without filters.

Both Charleigh and Rose are committed to giving you witty, sexy, intelligent novels that will leave you wanting more.

Ella Fox:

When she’s not writing, Ella indulges the gypsy in her blood and travels the country. Ella loves reading, movies, music, buying make-up, reading Tmz, Twitter and pedicures… not necessarily in that order. She has a wild sense of humor and loves to laugh. Her favorite thing in the world is hanging out with her family and watching comedy movies.

Sara Ney:

Sara Ney is the USA Today Bestselling Author of the How to Date a Douchebag series, and is best known for her sexy, laugh-out-loud New Adult romances. Among her favorite vices, she includes: iced latte’s, historical architecture and well-placed sarcasm. She lives colorfully, collects vintage books, art, loves flea markets, and fancies herself British.

Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!

Kate Stewart:

Kate Stewart lives in Charleston, S.C. with her husband, Nick, and her naughty beagle, Sadie. A native of Dallas, Kate moved to Charleston three weeks after her first visit, dropping her career of 8 years, and declaring it her creative muse. Kate pens messy, sexy, angst-filled contemporary romance as well as romantic comedy and erotic suspense because it’s what she loves as a reader. A lover of all things ’80s and ’90s, especially John Hughes films and rap, she dabbles a little in photography, can knit a simple stitch scarf for necessity only and does a horrible job of playing the ukulele. Aside from running a mile without collapsing, traveling is the only other must on her bucket list. On occasion, she does very well at vodka.

Rochelle Paige:

Rochelle Paige is the Amazon bestselling author of nineteen books. She absolutely adores reading and her friends growing up used to tease her when she trailed after them, trying to read and walk at the same time. She loves stories with alpha males, sassy heroines, hot sex and happily ever afters. She is a bit of a genre hopper in both her reading and her writing. So far she’s written books in several romance sub-genres including new adult, contemporary, paranormal and romantic suspense.

She is the mother of two wonderful sons who inspired her to chase her dream of being an author. She wants them to learn from her that you can live your dream as long as you are willing to work for it.
