Blog Tour + Review: Hooked by Christina Phillips

Hooked
Viking Bastards MC #1
By: Christina Phillips
Releasing Feb 6th, 2017
Entangled Scorched

unknown-13Zach…

I like my sex dirty and disposable. I’m not into commitment or chicks who want more than one night. My brothers and club come first, second and last.

Until she walks into my life. Classy, rich and so out of my league it’s crazy. A week together should get her out of my system, but this good girl is so bad when we’re all alone and I can’t get enough of her.

I don’t do forever, but she’s hooked me so bad I don’t ever want to let her go. Except there’s no way a princess can live in my world and I sure as hell won’t live in hers…

Let me start off by saying that I wasn’t as “hooked” (pun intended) as I thought I would be after finishing this book. I was definitely hooked by the fact it was a biker romance as those have become one of my favorite romance genres (thank you Sons of Anarchy) but overall this book did not live up to the expectations I had for it.

Grace Mulholland’s life is all up in the air after she decides to break off her engagement to her boyfriend of four years. She is on her way to start a new chapter in her life when her car breaks down. Add the fact that her cellphone is dead as well and Grace is in a bit of a pickle as she finds herself in a part of Los Angeles she has never been before. Oh and it is raining so you know everything is working in her favor at this point. Her best bet of finding a phone is the bar, Odin’s, across the street that looks less than friendly. Armed with her umbrella, she makes her way into the bar and get a lot more than she bargained for when she meets Zach Reynolds.

“I can’t tear my gaze away as the sexiest fucking redhead I’ve ever seen strolls across the bar as though she owns it.”

With those words alone, you get a sense that Zach is not the typical guy Grace is used to. A biker to his core he says what he means and takes what he wants making him extremely sexy in my eyes. He also has that effect on Grace as their initial meeting is full of sexual tension as Grace decides to indulge in this bad boy seeing as she is now free to experience what she wants without her fiancé approval. The back room of the bar is when things really heat up and it doesn’t stop there. From then on the two who are complete opposites down to the core decide to engage in a casual hook-up with one another. It may have started out hot and heavy and more on the purely physical side but soon Grace and Zach begin to feel more. Hearts get mixed up in it, which was not part of the deal as Zach in particular does not do relationships.

I really enjoyed Zach and Grace as a couple. They were complete opposites with Grace being the heir to a hotel chain and Zach being part of a MC who works on cars for a living but they still clicked. Zach plays the big bad biker role well but it is obvious underneath him is just a man who misses how his parents, cares for his siblings a lot, and keeps love at arms length. Grace surprised me with the bit of backbone she starts to form throughout the book, speaking her mind to Zach at times when it is not the most comfortable as well as bringing on the sass which leads to some adorable and steamy moments between the two. I also loved her dreams of moving past her life working for her family. I would have never guessed she wanted to be a baker which was a great twist to her character.

While Zach and Grace’s story was a joy to read, there were a few things that deterred me from truly loving this book. I realize that the relationship with Zach and Grace starts out purely physical and is therefore suppose to be temporary but I felt that the overall timeline of their relationship in this book was too rushed. The pacing was too quick for me in some parts especially when the storyline hints at another intimate moment between Zach and Grace and instead of giving the readers that moment in detail it is fast forwarded to the next day and basically summarized. I guess I was a little greedy but this happened at least twice and both times I wanted to see those moments between Zach and Grace making me just a tad bit frustrated.

Another part of the book that I wish was expanded upon was the moments into the MC that Zach is a part of, the Viking Bastards. Yes, this is a biker romance but there is not enough scope into the biker aspect that you sometimes forget that Zach is even a part of it. I get that Zach was trying to shield Grace from that part of his life but I honestly think her being introduced to it would have added to the storyline more. My hope is that we get more of a view into the MC in the other books in this series.

Overall, I think this was a good start to this series. While I didn’t absolutely love it, we did get introduced to a number of secondary characters that I can only assume will get their own stories in the other books in this series which I am looking forward to. One in particular I am hoping for is Zach’s sister, Kat and his best friend, Cade. We will have to see though.

If you enjoy biker romances that are hot and steamy but pack in some heart as well, then check out Hooked by Christina Phillips.

“Bedroom eyes had been watching her most of the night, and Joss couldn’t take it anymore. She’d eye fucked him on the dance floor until he finally joined her, and she’d spent the last half an hour grinding into him in what he obviously read as an invitation.”

With an opening paragraph like that, you know the story that follows is going to be one hell of a read. And let me tell you, it was.

Ugh there are so many things to say about this book! The prologue alone sucked me in right away. The chemistry between Maddox and Joss when they first hook up in the bathroom at a nightclub was just SO. FREAKING. AMAZING. Maddox from the very beginning exuded confidence and an air of dominance that made my toes curl. He also had just the sexiest one liners in the prologue while him and Joss are getting much more “acquainted” with one another. The prologue definitely sets you up wondering what is going to happen next between these two since their hookup is meant to be a one time only thing as Maddox, of course, does not do the girlfriend thing.

Fast forward to a year later and fate, if you want to call it that, has brought them back together, only this time there is more at stake if they decide to pick up where they left off a year ago.

“Bedroom eyes stood at the front of the room behind a long table, addressing a group of ten police officers sitting in front of him.”

“Maddox Hunt. Police lieutenant. Total badass.”

I loved that Maddox was above Joss in rank because it just added to the whole “forbidden romance” vibe going on as both had something to lose if their relationship was discovered by their fellow officers. I also LOVED that both of them came from a family of cops because, for Joss in particular, it influenced her personality and how she handled people with very strong commanding presences like Maddox.

It was Joss’s strength that I really admired because it allowed her to accept what happened with her ex-boyfriend of 6 years, Nick the Prick, and move on. Sure, she had her heart broken but she didn’t exactly wallow over what was lost but more accepted that she would never become the person she was towards the end, someone without a voice, and vowed to never have that happen to her again. And it of course lead to her to Maddox, so it all worked out in the end.

While Joss was such a lovable, funny, trusting yet vulnerable character, it was Maddox that really stole the show for me. There is just something about him that I was drawn too. He honestly has just such a commanding presence it radiates off of the pages when you read this book. He oozes dominance as he goes after what he wants and takes what he wants. You learn that Maddox like his kink which I very much enjoyed but he also always made sure that Joss was comfortable and what they were doing was what she wanted which just added so much to his character. There are just so many facets to Maddox but I think it was his dealing with his mother’s abandonment and his father’s Alzheimer’s that really pulled at my heartstrings. He puts up such a good front, making it seem like he has accepted what life has thrown him when really he is still hurting and coping with his mother’s abandonment.

Something I found unique about this book is that while these two try and have a no-strings attached sexual relationship, it is initially Maddox who finds himself trying to reel in his feelings for Joss and not the other way around. Usually, it is the girl who realizes she is falling for the guy and tries to stop herself because she knows it will only end in heartbreak but this time it is the guy that first starts noticing these feelings more than the girl. Joss definitely has her moments in the book but it is Maddox’s small realizations that he is changing and not knowing how to stop it that was refreshing to see.

OK, I could gush about this book SO much more but I feel like you just need to read it and experience it for yourself.

If you want a romance with some kink that will definitely leave you hot and bothered but is also funny and has its heart-tugging moments, then pick up Heartbreaker by Stacey Kennedy. DO IT!! (I promise you won’t regret it.)

With all the suspense and mystery wrapped up in this story, unfortunately it fell a little flat for me. I will say there was definitely potential for me to like it more than I did but there seemed to be too many factors that hindered my reading experience of it.

For Logan Hunt, protecting people is what he does. His new post as guard for the queen regent is a task he is more than ready to undertake. But when the king himself tells Logan to take a few days off and recharge, something he is hesitant to do, Logan’s life is changed forever as it reunites him with Kass, or as he knew her Cassandra, his first love. Their second chance love story takes off from there but not without a few bumps in the road as Kass has secrets. Secrets that will threaten not only her relationship with Logan but also put the lives of others in danger.

Logan is first introduced in the Dirty Players Duet, which is a duology that focuses on Zelda, who is the queen regent’s sister and the king’s brother, Cal. For those who have read this duology, you will be well versed in this world from the very beginning. For those who haven’t, like myself, I definitely had a harder time understanding exactly what is going on. This was the biggest issue I had with this book because very early on I realized that it would have been better if I had read the Dirty Players Duet first because even though it says that this can be read as a standalone there is still a lot that you don’t fully understand as you are reading. This is ultimately why I had such a hard time getting into the story because I just felt like I was missing something.

As for the romance between Logan and Kass, it was rekindled fast which makes sense given that not too much time after that, obstacles rose up that threatened their relationship. While there were some steamy moments here and there, the bulk of Logan and Kass’s relationship was rooted in emotion as you are able to see through both of their points of view in every other chapter. The alternating chapters is something that really  enabled me to see just how much they affected one another especially during the more intense parts of the story. This aspect of the book really brought the romance to life for me as it seemed to sometimes get bogged down by the amount of mystery and suspense found within the rest of the book.

There was no short supply of suspenseful moments, which grabbed my attention and propelled me forward through this book as you see Kass’s decisions over the last few years come back to haunt her, threaten her relationship with Logan, and put other lives in danger. Tia Louise also did a really good job bringing an air of mystery to the book as there is a key element in regards to Kass’s character that is kept under wraps quite nicely until it is revealed later on in the story. I did not see that reveal coming nor did I consider it a possibility which only added more intrigue to how the rest of the story was going to unfold.

I think if I had read the Dirty Players Duet first, I would have enjoyed this book a lot more. With that being said though, the suspenseful and thrilling moments of this book kept me on the edge of my seat as you are left wondering whether or not Logan and Kass’s relationship would survive. If you interested in a thrilling second chance romance that is truly tested by the very end, then check out Dirty Dealers by Tia Louise.

I feel like I should preface this review by saying that Carly Phillips is my most read romance author since I began reading them almost nine years ago (Big Shot is my 18th book of hers). Anytime I see her coming out with a new book, I jump at the chance to read it as soon as I can. But Carly Phillips is only half of this wonderful duo who wrote not only Big Shot but the Dirty Sexy series which I HIGHLY recommend to anyone. I devoured that series last year and learned just how freaking amazing Carly Phillips and Erika Wilde are together. Big Shot left me hot and bothered while also giving me the warm fuzzies, earning its place as yet another Carly Phillips book that I absolutely loved.

You get a glimpse of Wes and Natalie in the fourth book of the Dirty Sexy series, Dirty Sexy Sinner, and even from that brief moment you know these two have something between them, even if Natalie is purposefully giving Wes the cold shoulder. This is a nemeses to lovers story as Wes and Natalie have been challenging and fighting against one another ever since they were kids when Natalie tried to hang out with the boys which comprised of her brother, Connor, and Wes, his best friend. Feelings emerged on both sides over the years but that pesky fact that Wes was Natalie’s brother’s best friend, and therefore Wes didn’t want to break the bro code and jeopardize his friendship with Connor, deterred anything from happening. Until now, of course 🙂

Ugh there were just so many things that I loved about this book! Let’s start out with the fact that Natalie makes the connection that Wes has a smolder BETTER than Flynn Rider’s from Tangled, which is my all time favorite Disney movie. Then you have Natalie who is never afraid to leave Wes on his toes, as she makes sure he realizes that he may have won the bet but she was not going to be at his beck and call without throwing a few wrenches into his plans. This leads to the infamous poker game scene which results in the two finally giving into the sexual tension that has been building for years. But I think my favorite thing that occurred from that, besides the toe-curling sex, is Wes’s nickname for Natalie. It is both sexy AND adorable. Every time Wes called Natalie it I got flutters in my stomach and squealed like a little girl. Obviously if you want to know what it is you are going to have to read the book.

While there was definitely a good share of hot and steamy moments in this book, there were also super sweet, heart-squeezing moments where you could see just how much Natalie and Wes care about each other. There is one moment in particular where they were just enjoying each other’s company, with their clothes on, and it felt like such a real moment between them that they became more than just a couple in a book for me. It’s a moment that I hope will happen to me when I meet my person which is pretty powerful given how normal the scene was in the grand scheme of things.

As much as I loved this book, there is just one thing that I think would have made it just a little bit better. I was left wanting more from this book which has been a usual result after reading the other series these two wrote. I would have loved for Natalie’s term of being at Wes’s beck and call as a result of losing their bet to last for a month instead of just two weeks. If it was twice as long we could have gotten more hilarious, adorable, and not to mention steamy moments between these two.

Despite me being a little greedy and wanting more, Big Shot was a superb start to Carly Phillips and Erika Wilde’s new series. Wes will truly become your new book boyfriend as you see his sexy, dominant side but also his caring side as he and Natalie finally realize they were meant for one another. If you like romances where the couple challenges each other at first leading to some serious fireworks later on but who also have history together, then check out Big Shot by Carly Phillips and Erika Wilde.

Blog Tour + Review: Girl Breaker by Harper Kincaid

Harper Kincaid
Girl Breaker
Break on Through, Book 3
January 17, 2017

girl-breakerSometimes the best thing a good girl can do is make a bad decision.

Jessica has always been the girl with her head in the clouds and her nose in a book, only dating the “nice guys”. But when rough-around-the-edges Viking-biker-god, Mad Max, and his precocious little girl move onto her street, Jessica falls hard and fast for both of them. Max is no stranger to women wanting to share his bed—and he’s always been more than happy to oblige them all. He’s lived wild all his life—that is, until a daughter shows up on his doorstep and he meets a redheaded angel down the block.

There’s nothing more he wants than to claim Jessica as his, to bring the gorgeous spitfire to his bed. But a man like him doesn’t get a happy ending with a woman like her. He’s got a whole other life, one he’s kept secret for good reason. If Jessica found out what he really is, there’s no way she could love him. He should keep his hands to himself. But he’s Mad Max—he’s never done the right thing, and he’s not going to start now.

Warning: Contains a dominating alpha male who’s a lot more than he seems, and a good girl with a swirl of flavors under her vanilla

The minute I read the synopsis for this book I wanted it in my hands ASAP. You have a girl described as always having her nose in a book and her head in the clouds who meets a Viking-biker-god who also has a daughter. Umm who wouldn’t want to read this book. Basically, this book had my name written ALL over it.

Not only is Jessica a reader but she is also a hopeless romantic which made me believe she and I were like twins. The fact that she falls in love with a tough, alpha male who rides a motorcycle just made my heart swoon even more, bringing out some serious Sons of Anarchy vibes (Jax Teller anyone?).

I will say that I had read the previous two books in this series before reading Girl Breaker so I had a bit more context going into this book in regards to Jessica and Max’s relationship as there is an event in the second book that brings them together, but not in a relationship, for a brief period of time. For those who might not have the previous context, the book clues you in as you go along so you aren’t left wondering how things came about. I think it is important to note that while they finally get together in this book, Jessica and Max knew each other for four months prior to where this book starts off. This was important for me because their relationship definitely develops quickly. Without the knowledge of those previous four months of knowing one another when Jessica, who is a teacher, was tutoring Piper, Max’s daughter, I would see their relationship as one moving too quickly possibly going down the route of insta-love. But, that is definitely not the case here.

I had really high hopes for this third book in the Break on Through series after the second book fell flat for me and, of course, after reading its synopsis. I am excited to say that Girl Breaker did not disappoint. The first chapter was all the confirmation I needed as we see Jessica finally grow a spine and speak her mind to Max who tries explain to her why he isn’t the right man for her after months of dancing around their attraction for one another. Jessica definitely portrays the good girl against Mad Max’s bad boy image as she is known to never swear or speak up unless it is something she is passionate about. And boy does she let Max know just how wrong he is, allowing their sexual tension to ooze off the page.

“And by the way, for the record?” I took a couple steps into his space this time. “Just because a woman doesn’t like to let it all hang out doesn’t mean she isn’t wild. Don’t let the long skirts and laced-up boots fool you. If you were to get even a li’l taste of me, you would’ve discovered under my vanilla is a whole swirl of different flavors.” I grabbed his belt buckle and pulled him to me. “And all of them are very kink-friendly, just dying for the right man to own me.”

While Jessica and Max’s relationship definitely held my attention, there were just a few things that I wanted more out of this story. The sexual tension and overall connection that Jessica and Max have, which only grows as the story unfolds, is definitely there, but after that fiery banter back and forth in the first chapter I expected quite a few hot and heavy sex scenes given how built up their getting together seemed to be. And while there definitely was at least one moment between the two of them, a majority of their intimate moments were eluded to and not explained in explicit detail. Now this did not at all detract from my reading experience because I realized over time Jessica and Max’s intimate moments that did not take place in the bedroom held more weight in regards to their story as they had some obstacles to overcome. In the end, it would have been nice to have some more hot and heavy scenes between these two but I enjoyed their more emotional, intimate moments just as much.

Jessica and Max were definitely my favorite couple out of the three books but just like the previous two books, I wanted more. While I didn’t feel like this book was too short, I did think that the story itself could be stretched out a little. The pacing was great until we got towards the end where it seemed like the conflict just sprang up out of nowhere. Shortly after, the climax happened in regards to the conflict and then it all just wrapped up nicely in the epilogue. It seemed a little too choppy towards the end which I think could have been smoothed out if the storyline was expanded upon a little bit.

Despite the few issues I had, I absolutely adored Jessica and Max’s story. Their coming together as a couple was not an easy one as trust had to be gained all while some secrets of Max’s came out in the process. But their love was an adventure, a kink-friendly one at that, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

If you are looking for a romance with a tough, alpha male, who happens to ride a motorcycle, that is hot and heavy but also full of emotion, then check out Girl Breaker.

AND, if you enjoy Jessica and Max’s story, then definitely check out the first two books in the series, Rule Breaker and Heart Breaker.

Excerpt

With her phone pressed to her ear, Tiffany Winters ducked out of the rain and into the Kiss, an eclectic Manhattan bar, to return calls and take care of a mountain of text messages that had piled up during her dinner meeting. She listened to her client’s wife explain why she didn’t want her husband traveling too often to endorse a hotel chain Tiffany was planning on pitching to him next week. Her client had already nixed any mention of his family in the advertisements, and reducing his travel would make it an even harder sell.
“I hear your concern, Allison,” she said as she sat on a barstool. “If you and Matt decide this isn’t the right thing for your family, we’ll turn our efforts in another direction.” As a sports agent, dealing with significant others was part of the job, a part Tiffany enjoyed and other agents rued. Sure, some wives assumed their husband’s success granted them the power to be overly demanding. Ass kissing was part of the game. Sometimes she wished she could give the meeker wives lessons in how to be tough. Teach them to have balls as big as their husbands’ and come right out and say what they meant instead of beating around the bush with bullshit hypotheticals. She reminded herself often that not every woman grew up in a testosterone-laden house with two competitive older brothers and a father who won the Heisman in college and went on to play pro sports—a house where mincing words didn’t cut the mustard.
“You missed the wedding.”
The deep male voice drew Tiffany’s attention from her phone call to the fine specimen of a man standing behind the bar. He looked like he’d just stepped off a Hot Guys in Suits Pinterest page. His tie hung loosely around the collar of his white dress shirt, which was open three buttons deep, revealing a smattering of dark chest hair, a rarity nowadays, when so many men manscaped every inch of their bodies. Tiffany preferred a man to look like a man, which included hair in all the right places. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, exposing heavily corded forearms, and his jacket hung casually from two fingers over his left shoulder. Her fingers itched to send the last few buttons—and that jacket—flying to the floor. The guy’s chiseled jaw and dark eyes were movie-star classic, and his dark hair was thick enough to hang on to. She’d had a long, hard day, and he looked like he could provide a long, hard, pleasure-filled night.
Perfect.
Holding his gaze, she spoke into the phone as he laid his jacket across the bar, giving her the impression he wasn’t the bartender, but rather a guest who’d happened to wander back there. “Allison, I’ll see what else I can come up with and get back to you. Right. Okay, hon. Thank you.” After ending the call, she responded to the stud behind the bar. “Wedding? Who gets married at a bar?”
“My brother, for one.” He nodded across the room to a group of men and women who were holding their glasses up in a toast.
She zeroed in on one she recognized as her tall, dark colleague. “Mick Bad is married?” The high-powered attorney was a workaholic like her, and he’d been unattached two months earlier, when they’d worked together on a deal for one of her clients. She’d never understand couples who claimed to fall in love practically overnight. Love was a crutch for weak people who needed someone else to lean on. Except Mick Bad had never needed anyone to lean on. She wondered if his new bride was pregnant.
“The one and only.” Hot guy’s eyes took a long, luxurious stroll down her body, lingered on her breasts, then roamed north, hovering around her mouth, before finally meeting her gaze. He flashed a wolfish grin full of sinful promises.
“Dylan Bad at your service.”
Pushing thoughts of her newly married colleague’s expedient nuptials aside, she focused on his very available brother. A definite player, which was fine with her. She had no time—or interest—in anything but a quick hookup, and the six-two or -three stud had already shot to the top of tonight’s fantasy list.
“What’s your pleasure?” he asked with more than a hint of innuendo.
You. Naked, with your head buried between my legs, to start.
“Surprise me.” She watched him turn to prepare her drink and checked out the way his dark slacks hugged his perfect ass. It had been a long time since she’d found a man this attractive. But Mick Bad’s brother? That spelled trouble.

tastytoursreview
Yet another Melissa Foster book that I have thoroughly enjoyed. I honestly don’t think there is a book of hers that I could not enjoy. I have read all about her Wild boys and I am so excited to be able to read about her Bad boys because, as I have come to learn, they truly are bad especially Dylan :).
Tiffany Winters’s life revolves around her business, setting up her own sports management agency in New York after having a successful one in California. Winters fits Tiffany perfectly as she is cutthroat, aggressive, and goes after what she wants. This, of course, results in a life that does to enable her to have that much down time or Tiffany time as Dylan says. This and her fear of getting her heart broken again after being burned in the past has left Tiffany determined to stay in control, which means romance wise she sticks to flings and not letting her get to close to anyone. Things were going according to plan until she meets Dylan Bad.
From the minute they meet sparks not only fly, they practically explode from the sexual tension. But as always, Tiffany does not let her control slip through her fingers making it perfectly clear to Dylan that this would only be a one time thing because she simply did not have the time. The only thing that Tiffany did not prepare for was just how persistent Dylan would be once he realized he wanted more from her than just one night. His determination holds true once he is able to see past the walls that Tiffany has built as they spend more and more time together.
Things definitely start out hot and heavy between Tiffany and Dylan as their initial meeting in Dylan’s bar quickly leading to them practically ripping at each other’s clothing in a cab. Their idea of a one night stand is paused but that does not stop the two of them from getting together and enjoying each other’s company. I will say that the beginning of the story where Tiffany and Dylan meet, banter ensues, and then they basically get down to business in the back of a cab seemed a little rushed to me. But what happens after that completely makes up for it as you see just how adorable and sexy Dylan is trying to win Tiffany over. I really enjoyed Tiffany because even though she was this workaholic her motives were justified. She was going after what she loved while also trying to protect her heart from getting hurt again. Unfortunately, there is no way in hell Tiffany stood a chance of keeping her heart guarded once she met Dylan because that man knows how to woo a woman. Dylan not only stole Tiffany’s heart in the end but he also stole a little bit of my heart too.

Nothing is sexier than a tech guy who has worked hard to shed his old geek identity who also happens to be a multi-billionaire. After being introduced to Kaden in the first book, I was so excited to meet Lucas who is just as appealing if not more because of his determination to strip himself of who he was when he was younger. Goodbye geek who found solace in video games to forget the bullying from his older brother, hello gorgeous hunk who has made someone of himself and now wants to go after the one person he has always wanted: Maxie, his best friend.
It’s not exactly easy as Maxie was married to his older brother, the same brother who tormented him for most of his life, before he died in a car accident. This piece of the story just added to the dynamic in this book because it was not your usual in-love-with-my-best-friend-for-my-whole-life storyline because Maxie was someone else’s before they finally gave into their feelings for one another and that someone was Lucas’s brother.

I really enjoyed the lead up to Lucas and Maxie finally getting together because Lucas’s brother caused so much trouble both when he was alive and even after his death. It was sweet to see them decide that it was finally their time to be together and to move on even if Lucas’s parents at first disapproved given their connection to one another because of Maxie’s marriage to Lucas’s brother. Their relationship was very emotional charged as they have years of feelings built up as well as Maxie’s journey to overcoming the loss of her child whom she was pregnant with in the prologue of the story.

The only issues I had with this story was again like with the first book in this series is that it was just too short for me. I wanted more! I would have loved to see this story stretched out a little more because certain elements in this book seemed to happened too fast and I would have loved to have them spaced out a little more. Other than that it was another satisfying read by Carly Phillips.

While this is the fifth book in the Not Quite series by Catherine Bybee, it was the first book for me that I had read by her. Because it is the fifth in the series and there are obviously characters who have already had their own stories told in the series that return, it took me a little bit to understand how the connection between everyone came about. Once I was able to have a bit of grasp on that, I was able to enjoy the story so much more and even wonder how some of the couples mentioned got together. It is this large cast of characters and their tight knit connections to one another that was an added bonus of this book because it made you invested and wanting more.
Now before I get too carried away, let’s focus on back to the couple in this wonderful story, Mary and Glen, who obviously stole the spotlight. Now these two met about a year before the story presently takes place and it was not love at first sight more like bicker at first sight. Though there was obvious chemistry between the two, Mary and Glen continued to banter back and forth each time they would see each other but never fully acting on it until now. It only took Mary’s best friend Dakota’s “graceful” fall down the stairs and into labor to set the wheels of this coast to coast romance in motion.
I have to say that Mary and Glen’s banter back and forth really drew me into their story and maybe that’s just because I love when the two main characters don’t get along at first. But there were times where I was grinning like an idiot and holding back laughter from the things that were said between the two of them. The moment that really just hooked me in was the bikini scene because I had the feeling what happened was going to happen but when it did the reaction from both sides were equal parts hilarious and hot.
Besides the banter and obvious attraction between Mary and Glen, I really liked how this romance that happened from one coast to another felt entirely realistic. Long distance relationships are hard to navigate, and I guess it helps that Glen is the CFO of Fairchild Charters and therefore has access to planes and is a pilot himself that obviously makes it more plausible but I loved the timing of their relationship. They actually dated instead of getting caught up in the chemistry they have for one another from the very beginning and it just really added to the pacing of the story that I really appreciated.
There is so much more to say about this wonderfully romantic and at times hilarious while also being hot story that I would be here for a while. But I will say if you like characters who butt heads in the beginning, female characters who are strong willed and independent as heck, and a romance that is adorably cute, then pick up Not Quite Perfect by Catherine Bybee

Whoa, did this book take me by surprise. First of all you should know that Melissa Foster has become an auto-buy author for me because since the very first book I got the opportunity to review I fell in love with it and that has not stopped since then. I now own the first books of each of her four series that make up this gigantic Love in Bloom series and intend to read each of them and continue on in delving into this amazing world she has created in the near future.

Ok, now back to Chased by Love. Let’s start with the fact that the cover like most of Melissa’s covers is absolutely GORGEOUS. It is what drew me to this book in the first place. Then when I found out it is a romance involving a rockstar and an actress co-staring in a movie together I was sold. I mean who doesn’t want to read about a rockstar who lives off the highs of his success through the usual partying and womanizing of fans who is staring in a movie where his co-star is an extremely professional, takes-her-job-very seriously actress. Add in the fact that sparks fly between the two of them and they don’t exactly see eye to eye in the beginning and I was sure this book was going to have some serious heat.

Chased_Quote1_FINALYes, there was definitely some major heat between Boone Stryker, who was giving me a serious Adam Levine vibe, and Trish Ryder but what seriously surprised me was the amount of heart that was in this book. I assumed that because Boone was a super famous rockstar that his character would self-centered, arrogant, and have the ego the size of Texas. That is the opinion that Trish had formed of him because of his behavior on set but we quickly learn that that is NOT Boone at all. You learn early on that Boone has a lot more on his plate to deal with than the usual struggles of hot, in demand rockstar. You also learn that selfish is not a word in Boone’s vocabulary as he constantly puts the other people he loves in his life before himself. It is this complete 180 of Boone’s character, in a good way of course, that made me invest in his character and the things his was dealing with as well as his budding relationship with Trish.

Chased_Quote3_FINALTrish Ryder was the perfect person for Boone because of her pushiness and the fact that
she was not going to run the other way when things got tough. She even says a number of times that Ryders don’t run from the hard stuff and it is that mantra and a little bit of her stubbornness that allows Boone to finally see that he has someone on his side rooting for him when it has always been the other way around. I always enjoyed Trish’s character but I think it is when she finally meets Boone’s family that I really fell in love with her because of how well she got along with them and didn’t tone down her pushy personality in any way. It was reading those scenes and seeing the dynamics between her and his family especially when she set Lucky straight which was hilarious, that really allowed me to see the amazing person Boone sees and fall in love with.

So if you’re looking for a romance with a caring, selfless rockstar who truly has a heart of gold that also packs on the heat, then pick up Chased by Love by Melissa Foster.

Boy, did my heart flutter numerous times while reading this book. I mean you have the quintessential “good girl” meets “bad boy”but Annie Rains definitely ups the cuteness factor by adding dogs into the mix as well as tons of emotion as you watch Griffin try and adapt to his mother and who she is after being diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s. On top of that, Val who is suppose to be our “good girl” as she is the daughter of a respectable preacher secretly writes romance novels under a pen name. As someone who has dreams of writing her own romance novel one day and who also has seen what Alzheimer’s can do to someone they love, this book was giving me all the feels.
This is my first Annie Rains’s book so I was not too familiar to the world she had created in this series. Despite the initial confusion on who the secondary characters were and how they fit within the story, I really enjoyed stepping into this world where there is a military community at its center. It has been a while since I have read a romance where the military is present so it was great to step back into it especially since it was in a more contemporary setting as opposed to the more suspenseful books I have read in the past. Our first look at this military community is through Griffin and his job as a military K-9 officer. I absolutely loved that Griffin worked alongside dogs and that he felt and cared so much for the dogs he worked with as well as his own dog Trooper who was with him when he himself was in the military. The dog element, both with Griffin and Val, just gave the book a heart-warming feel to it especially since it is because of a dog that they had their first interaction with one another. The cute aspect of their “meet-cute” moment goes to the dog that Val is looking after, Sweet Cheeks, but the moment is anything but given the fact that Val almost ran Griffin off the road. Griffin, in turn, decides to let his feelings of Val not taking the time to train the dog properly influence his impression of her. It is only until after Val confronts him for his behavior that Griffin  learns she is only looking after the dog for Alma, an elderly women recovering from hip surgery in the nursing home where Val volunteers and where Griffin’s mother now lives.
Though they have their differences, Val being the “good girl” as a preacher’s daughter who volunteers reading to the elderly women at the nursing home and Griffin being the “bad boy” who has tattoos and rides a motorcycle, they also have a few similarities that allow them to slowly get to know one another. A dog causes them to meet but it is the nursing home that also plays a role in the beginnings of their relationship especially since Griffin’s mother is part of the book club that Val runs. The fact that Val volunteers her time reading to these women because of the connection she has to reading seeing as it inspired her to become a writer was absolutely wonderful. Val’s beliefs on reading and her secret life as a romance writer is what truly connected me to her character. She brings such joy to these women’s lives even if Griffin whose mother seems to enjoy the bookclub knows this is not who his mother once was. Griffin’s issue with the bookclub and how it is changing the mother he once knew is just one example of his struggle dealing with the fact that his mother has Alzheimer’s. This once respected academic who wouldn’t be caught dead listening to a romance novel before her diagnosis is who he wants back more than anything in the world. Given the fact that my grandmother had Alzheimer’s and that I slowly watched her disappear in front of my eyes when I visited her, I know exactly how Griffin felt and understood his pain as well as the frustration he experienced. It is this aspect of the novel that really pulled on my heart strings.
There is so much that I connected to and felt when reading this novel which was surprising because it took me a few chapters for me to get into it initially. But despite that, it was the emotion and heart-warming moments that reeled me in getting me ready for the passion just below the surface. I really enjoyed this book and hope to read more of Annie Rains in the future.
