With true love, there’s no such thing as a safe distance.

Mary Kildare knows how to read people. It’s both why she makes a great therapist and why she refuses to trust the average bachelor. Staying fiercely independent has been her primary relationship strategy—until wealthy playboy pilot (and commitmentphobe) Glen Fairchild reappears in her life. After a yearlong teasing tug-of-war, Mary and Glen test the waters of attraction, only to find that their physical chemistry runs deeper than flirtation.

At first, a bicoastal romance suits them both—especially since Glen can swoop in and whisk Mary away on one of his company’s planes. But no matter how close they get, they’re still three thousand miles apart. And when Mary’s life is threatened, Glen realizes the one luxury he doesn’t have is time. Can he close the distance between them before it’s too late?

While this is the fifth book in the Not Quite series by Catherine Bybee, it was the first book for me that I had read by her. Because it is the fifth in the series and there are obviously characters who have already had their own stories told in the series that return, it took me a little bit to understand how the connection between everyone came about. Once I was able to have a bit of grasp on that, I was able to enjoy the story so much more and even wonder how some of the couples mentioned got together. It is this large cast of characters and their tight knit connections to one another that was an added bonus of this book because it made you invested and wanting more.
Now before I get too carried away, let’s focus on back to the couple in this wonderful story, Mary and Glen, who obviously stole the spotlight. Now these two met about a year before the story presently takes place and it was not love at first sight more like bicker at first sight. Though there was obvious chemistry between the two, Mary and Glen continued to banter back and forth each time they would see each other but never fully acting on it until now. It only took Mary’s best friend Dakota’s “graceful” fall down the stairs and into labor to set the wheels of this coast to coast romance in motion.
I have to say that Mary and Glen’s banter back and forth really drew me into their story and maybe that’s just because I love when the two main characters don’t get along at first. But there were times where I was grinning like an idiot and holding back laughter from the things that were said between the two of them. The moment that really just hooked me in was the bikini scene because I had the feeling what happened was going to happen but when it did the reaction from both sides were equal parts hilarious and hot.
Besides the banter and obvious attraction between Mary and Glen, I really liked how this romance that happened from one coast to another felt entirely realistic. Long distance relationships are hard to navigate, and I guess it helps that Glen is the CFO of Fairchild Charters and therefore has access to planes and is a pilot himself that obviously makes it more plausible but I loved the timing of their relationship. They actually dated instead of getting caught up in the chemistry they have for one another from the very beginning and it just really added to the pacing of the story that I really appreciated.
There is so much more to say about this wonderfully romantic and at times hilarious while also being hot story that I would be here for a while. But I will say if you like characters who butt heads in the beginning, female characters who are strong willed and independent as heck, and a romance that is adorably cute, then pick up Not Quite Perfect by Catherine Bybee

Whoa, did this book take me by surprise. First of all you should know that Melissa Foster has become an auto-buy author for me because since the very first book I got the opportunity to review I fell in love with it and that has not stopped since then. I now own the first books of each of her four series that make up this gigantic Love in Bloom series and intend to read each of them and continue on in delving into this amazing world she has created in the near future.

Ok, now back to Chased by Love. Let’s start with the fact that the cover like most of Melissa’s covers is absolutely GORGEOUS. It is what drew me to this book in the first place. Then when I found out it is a romance involving a rockstar and an actress co-staring in a movie together I was sold. I mean who doesn’t want to read about a rockstar who lives off the highs of his success through the usual partying and womanizing of fans who is staring in a movie where his co-star is an extremely professional, takes-her-job-very seriously actress. Add in the fact that sparks fly between the two of them and they don’t exactly see eye to eye in the beginning and I was sure this book was going to have some serious heat.

Chased_Quote1_FINALYes, there was definitely some major heat between Boone Stryker, who was giving me a serious Adam Levine vibe, and Trish Ryder but what seriously surprised me was the amount of heart that was in this book. I assumed that because Boone was a super famous rockstar that his character would self-centered, arrogant, and have the ego the size of Texas. That is the opinion that Trish had formed of him because of his behavior on set but we quickly learn that that is NOT Boone at all. You learn early on that Boone has a lot more on his plate to deal with than the usual struggles of hot, in demand rockstar. You also learn that selfish is not a word in Boone’s vocabulary as he constantly puts the other people he loves in his life before himself. It is this complete 180 of Boone’s character, in a good way of course, that made me invest in his character and the things his was dealing with as well as his budding relationship with Trish.

Chased_Quote3_FINALTrish Ryder was the perfect person for Boone because of her pushiness and the fact that
she was not going to run the other way when things got tough. She even says a number of times that Ryders don’t run from the hard stuff and it is that mantra and a little bit of her stubbornness that allows Boone to finally see that he has someone on his side rooting for him when it has always been the other way around. I always enjoyed Trish’s character but I think it is when she finally meets Boone’s family that I really fell in love with her because of how well she got along with them and didn’t tone down her pushy personality in any way. It was reading those scenes and seeing the dynamics between her and his family especially when she set Lucky straight which was hilarious, that really allowed me to see the amazing person Boone sees and fall in love with.

So if you’re looking for a romance with a caring, selfless rockstar who truly has a heart of gold that also packs on the heat, then pick up Chased by Love by Melissa Foster.

Welcoming the Bad Boy
Hero’s Welcome #3
By: Annie Rains

Welcoming the BBFrom the bestselling author of Welcome to Forever (“Full of heart and emotion!”—Lori Wilde) comes a sweet, sexy novel about breaking all the rules. In Seaside, North Carolina, the boys on the base are heroes—but that doesn’t mean they’re always well-behaved.

As a preacher’s daughter, Valerie Hunt only dates the very respectable, very boring men who meet her father’s strict standards. In private, however, she leads a double life as a romance writer of steamy stories about the least respectable sorts of men. Valerie has always kept her hottest fantasies separate from her real life, but when she nearly runs a hot-blooded biker off the road, the lines begin to blur.

Even though Valerie almost killed him, Griffin Black can’t be angry after he learns the reason for her distracted driving: an unruly puppy belonging to her ailing friend. As a member of the military police K-9 unit, Griffin insists on training the dog himself. But he soon wonders how he’s ever going to stay disciplined around the most alluring, down-to-earth, and totally unattainable woman he’s ever met. Valerie is the ultimate good girl. And Griffin is going to need all his old tricks to unleash her wild side.

Boy, did my heart flutter numerous times while reading this book. I mean you have the quintessential “good girl” meets “bad boy”but Annie Rains definitely ups the cuteness factor by adding dogs into the mix as well as tons of emotion as you watch Griffin try and adapt to his mother and who she is after being diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s. On top of that, Val who is suppose to be our “good girl” as she is the daughter of a respectable preacher secretly writes romance novels under a pen name. As someone who has dreams of writing her own romance novel one day and who also has seen what Alzheimer’s can do to someone they love, this book was giving me all the feels.
This is my first Annie Rains’s book so I was not too familiar to the world she had created in this series. Despite the initial confusion on who the secondary characters were and how they fit within the story, I really enjoyed stepping into this world where there is a military community at its center. It has been a while since I have read a romance where the military is present so it was great to step back into it especially since it was in a more contemporary setting as opposed to the more suspenseful books I have read in the past. Our first look at this military community is through Griffin and his job as a military K-9 officer. I absolutely loved that Griffin worked alongside dogs and that he felt and cared so much for the dogs he worked with as well as his own dog Trooper who was with him when he himself was in the military. The dog element, both with Griffin and Val, just gave the book a heart-warming feel to it especially since it is because of a dog that they had their first interaction with one another. The cute aspect of their “meet-cute” moment goes to the dog that Val is looking after, Sweet Cheeks, but the moment is anything but given the fact that Val almost ran Griffin off the road. Griffin, in turn, decides to let his feelings of Val not taking the time to train the dog properly influence his impression of her. It is only until after Val confronts him for his behavior that Griffin  learns she is only looking after the dog for Alma, an elderly women recovering from hip surgery in the nursing home where Val volunteers and where Griffin’s mother now lives.
Though they have their differences, Val being the “good girl” as a preacher’s daughter who volunteers reading to the elderly women at the nursing home and Griffin being the “bad boy” who has tattoos and rides a motorcycle, they also have a few similarities that allow them to slowly get to know one another. A dog causes them to meet but it is the nursing home that also plays a role in the beginnings of their relationship especially since Griffin’s mother is part of the book club that Val runs. The fact that Val volunteers her time reading to these women because of the connection she has to reading seeing as it inspired her to become a writer was absolutely wonderful. Val’s beliefs on reading and her secret life as a romance writer is what truly connected me to her character. She brings such joy to these women’s lives even if Griffin whose mother seems to enjoy the bookclub knows this is not who his mother once was. Griffin’s issue with the bookclub and how it is changing the mother he once knew is just one example of his struggle dealing with the fact that his mother has Alzheimer’s. This once respected academic who wouldn’t be caught dead listening to a romance novel before her diagnosis is who he wants back more than anything in the world. Given the fact that my grandmother had Alzheimer’s and that I slowly watched her disappear in front of my eyes when I visited her, I know exactly how Griffin felt and understood his pain as well as the frustration he experienced. It is this aspect of the novel that really pulled on my heart strings.
There is so much that I connected to and felt when reading this novel which was surprising because it took me a few chapters for me to get into it initially. But despite that, it was the emotion and heart-warming moments that reeled me in getting me ready for the passion just below the surface. I really enjoyed this book and hope to read more of Annie Rains in the future.

Blog Tour: Seaside Lovers

I am beyond excited to be doing another blog tour for Melissa Foster because she has quickly become one of my new favorite authors.

The vast world she has created in this series along with some of her other series are just wonderful and really pull at my heart strings because they take place on Cape Cod which has always been a part of my life as I have family who live there, I lived there for a summer, and of course my family vacations there every summer.

It was great to set back into this world and read about Grayson and Parker’s story which I can only describe as swoon-worthy, adorable, and steamy 🙂

Seaside Summers #7
By: Melissa Foster

Releasing July 20, 2016
World Literary Press

After months of long-distance communication, actress Parker Collins and artist Grayson Lacroux finally plan to reconnect in the seaside town of Wellfleet, Massachusetts. But Parker never shows, and weeks pass without a word, leaving Grayson to believe he’s misinterpreted their budding relationship.

Parker has been running on autopilot ever since she lost her friend, mentor, and the only family she’s ever known, Bert Stein. Armed with junk food, tequila, and her big, lovable dog, she’s prepared to hole up and mourn—and determined to mend a fence Bert had never been able to with his estranged and bitter brother. But Parker didn’t count on the sinfully hot artist she’s been fantasizing about for nearly a year walking in on her grief-induced drunken night.

When Grayson stumbles across Parker, he has no idea what to make of the gorgeous blonde who blew him off despite the heat sizzling between them. But that doesn’t stop him from feeling protective of the woman who’s consumed his thoughts for months, and when he learns of Parker’s plans to confront an angry old man, he refuses to leave her side. As Parker’s past unfolds, they’re led on an unexpected journey of discovery. Their connection deepens, and late-night fantasies become passionate realities, until good intentions spark painful secrets, threatening the love they’ve found.

Now this may sound strange to some people but the way Grayson and Parker began their relationship, emailing each other back and forth about the drawings that Grayson had come up with for Parker’s foundation while also getting to know one another and therefore developing feelings for one another is exactly how I pictured two people falling for each other when I was younger. Truth be told I still think that, and even though the long distance was obviously an obstacle, there is something about them learning about one another through the emails they sent to one another that sounds incredibly romantic. Of course, both tried to remain professional but that soon fell at the wayside as both began to fall for one another despite the fact that they did not know if these feelings that were forming would be reciprocate when they planned on meeting in person.

Unfortunately, life got in the way as tragedy struck and Parker unexpectedly lost the one person in this world that was her family, Bert Stein. Parker grew up in foster care, shuffling from house to house before she met Bert who became not only her family but helped her launch her career as an actress. Therefore, when Parker learned that he passed away while shooting a film, the only appropriate thing for her to do in order to deal with her grief was to return to Wellfleet and basically become a hermit as she shut out the rest of the world and Grayson along with it. It is after two weeks of radio silence that fate decided to step in as Parker and Grayson finally meet. To say that the meeting is unprofessional is an understatement as Grayson happens upon Parker who is holed up in her house after believing that someone has broken in. Instead he finds Parker who has decided that tequila, candy, and horror movies are exactly what you need when dealing with the death of the only family you ever had. It is through this hilariously adorable first scene that you are able to see the spark between these two despite only having a relationship via email for the last ten months.
SSL_Quote3_NowAvailable_LIGHT
The downside to having their relationship be over email for the first ten months is that we did not see the beginnings of their relationship unfold so when they do meet and begin to get together it feels rather fast. I had to remind myself several times of their previous email correspondence so as to not just immediately write this off as insta-love. It is because of this that my investment in their relationship took a little bit of time but it was well worth it because Grayson  and Parker did not let me down. I was able to connect with Parker a lot faster than with Grayson, but after Grayson stands up to Abe, Bert’s brother, who Parker tries to reconcile with I soon began to swoon. The swooning continued as things started to heat up between Grayson and Parker whose passion for one another came with a side of cuteness. While I obviously believed they were attracted to one another, their more steamy moments had an air of tameness to them allowing for the cuteness factor to come through. It was a small moment between Grayson and Parker when Grayson was watching Parker as she read the script she had received for a rom-com that got me hook, line, and sinker because it is exactly the thing I hope for when I find the person I am going to fall in love with. Add in the fact that it takes place on Cape Cod and you have one happy reader :).

If you are looking for a swoon-worthy romance that is both realistic and adorably cute, then you need to pick up Seaside Lovers and then make your way through the rest of Melissa Foster’s books. You will not regret it, I promise!!

Review

Tech billionaires have become one of my new favorite characters in romance lately and that might be partly because I have a thing for guys who are geeks. It is definitely one of the reason why I was super excited when reading Going Down Easy especially since Kaden is not only a geek but was also being portrayed as being a bad boy as well. Geek + Bad boy + Billionaire = perfection.

Kaden’s quirks and reputation for being difficult has always been an issue in the past when it comes to his personal assistants but that all changes when Lexie is hired. Not only does she learn his quirks and anticipate his needs but she has no problem standing up to Kaden when he gets in one of his particular moods. Their first meeting is evidence enough that Lexie can handle herself when it comes to working for Kaden, allowing Kaden to fully recognize Lexie not only for her ability to complete his tasks but also in other ways ;).

Lexie’s resilience and ambition is what I loved about her character because not only did she hold her own when she first meets Kaden despite being super nervous but she ends up surprising him and throwing him for a loop a little bit. Lexie has had experience when dealing with someone who has certain moods and needs things done a certain way as she has been living with and helping her twin sister who is bipolar. This was my first time reading a romance where mental illness was been present in the storyline and I really liked that it was because it is something I have not seen before and it really allowed you to see just how hardworking and selfless Lexie is. Her love for her family and her sister is so strong that she does everything she can to help her sister, Kendall, have a normal life even if it means putting aside her dreams and what she want to do.

It is because of Lexie’s life, both living with her sister and growing up with her mother who suffers from severe depression that she is able to recognize that Kaden also has his own issues that he is dealing with, making her just the right girl for the job as his personal assistant and further on as the woman he falls in love with. Lexie is always there for him partly as his assistant and partly as something more and it is that loyalty that allows Kaden to see that Lexie is someone her can trust and, in the end, truly love.

While I loved Lexie and Kaden’s story, there were certainly things that I wished there was more of in the story. Overall, the book felt like it was too short to me and maybe thats because I read very quickly but I felt like there could have been more because I wanted more. I really liked that Kaden was a tech guy hence my thing for geeky guys but we didn’t really get to see too much into his company and app that he was launching other than the lawsuit that was happening between his ex-partner. I would have loved to see that added in because I think it would have stretched out the book a little bit more. On top of that, I also felt like Lexie and Kaden’s relationship progressed rather quickly. Of course, anticipating the happily ever after moment is key when reading a romance but I just think theirs was rushed. I would have loved to see it stretched out a little bit more throughout the book.

Overall, this was an adorable romance that was refreshingly realistic as it incorporated several characters dealing with mental health issues which I very much appreciated. If you are looking for your fill of a billionaire romance with a strong-minded heroine who stands up to her exacting, sometimes infuriating boss and in the process wins his heart, then check out Going Down Easy.

Even with her nostrils flared, Merina forced a smile. There was only one way past this gatekeeper. She called up an ounce of poise—an ounce being the most she could access at the moment. “Merina Van Heusen to see Reese Crane.”
“Ms. Van Heusen,” the woman said, her tone flat, her eyes going to the doorknob in Merina’s hand. “You’re here regarding the changes to the hotel, I presume.”
“You got it,” Merina said, barely harnessing her anger. How come everyone was so damn calm about dismantling a town landmark?
“Have a seat.” Crane’s bulldog gestured one manicured hand at a group of cushy white chairs, her mouth frowning in disgust as she took in Merina’s dishevelment. “Perhaps I could fetch you a towel first.”
“I won’t be sitting.” She wasn’t about to be put in her place by Reese’s underling. Then her prayers were answered as the set of gleaming wooden doors behind the secretary’s desk parted like the Red Sea.
Jackpot.
Merina barreled forward as the woman at the desk barked, “Excuse me!”
Merina ignored her. She wouldn’t be delayed another second…or so she thought. She stopped short when a woman in a very tight red dress, the neckline plunging into plentiful cleavage, her heels even higher and potentially more expensive than Merina’s Louboutins, swept out of the office and gave her a slow, mascaraed blink back. Then she sashayed around Merina, past the bulldog, and left behind a plume of perfume.
Interesting.
Reese’s latest date? An escort? If Merina believed the local tabloids, one and the same. Paying for dates certainly wasn’t above his pay grade.
Before the doors closed, she slipped into Reese’s office.
“Ms. Van Heusen!” came a bark behind her, but Reese, who stood facing the windows and looking out upon downtown, said three words that instantly shut his secretary up.
“She’s fine, Bobbie.”
Merina smirked back at the sour-faced, coal-eyed secretary as Reese’s office doors whooshed shut.
“Merina, I presume.” Reese still hadn’t turned. His posture was straight, jacket and slacks impeccably tailored to his muscular, perfectly proportioned body. Shark or not, the man could wear a suit. She’d seen the photos of him in the Trib as well as Luxury Stays, the hotel industry’s leading trade magazine, and like every other woman in Chicago, she hadn’t missed the gossip about him online. Like his more professional photos, his hands were sunk into his pant pockets, and his wavy, dark hair was styled and perfect.
Clearly the woman who had just left was here on other business…or past business. If something more clandestine was going on, Reese would appear more mussed. Then again, he probably didn’t muss his hair during sex. From what she gleaned about him via the media, Reese probably didn’t allow his hair to muss.
The snarky thought paired with a vision of him out of that suit, stalking naked and primed, golden muscles shifting with each long-legged step. Sharp, navy eyes focused only on her…
He turned to face her and she snapped out of her imaginings and blinked at the stubble covering a perfectly angled jaw. What was it about that hint of dishevelment on his otherwise perfect visage that made her breath catch?
Thick dark brows jumped slightly as his eyes zoomed in on her chest.
She sneered before venturing a glance down at her sodden silk shirt. Where she saw the perfect outline of both nipples. A tinge of heat lit her cheeks, and she crossed her arms haughtily, glaring at him as best she could while battling embarrassment.
“Seems this April morning is colder than you anticipated,” he drawled.

Merina Van Heusen’s whole world revolves around her family’s hotel and for good reason as she has grown up in it, cherishing all the history and unique personality that can be found within its walls. It is her love for The Van Heusen Hotel that drives her passion to run the hotel and to continue to maintain it the way she has always remembered it despite being surrounded by more modern hotels in the city of Chicago. Unfortunately, Merina’s dream of running the Van Heusen hotel comes to an abrupt end when she finds out that her parents, due to financial issues, have sold the hotel to Crane Hotels, the company that owns the “clinical, white washed” monstrosity that is the Crane Hotel. Infuriated that her parents did not tell her of their decision and determined that their hotel is not stripped of its identity to become another carbon copy of the Crane Hotel, Merina marches down to the there and decides to give the COO, Reese Crane, a piece of her mind.
Reese Crane, like Merina, understands what it means to want to maintain the legacy that surrounds him, in this case, keeping  the company his father built within the family by becoming the CEO of Crane Hotels. Reese encounters Merina’s fiery passion towards her own legacy, The Van Heusen Hotel, and her need to keep it in the family when she rushes into his office uninvited all but demanding he stop the changes being made to the hotel and to give it back to its rightful owners. It is this rather heated display by Merina that leaves an impression on Reese especially when he thinks of an idea that will allow him to convince his board of directors that he is no longer the “manwhore” he has been publicized as and therefore CEO material for his family’s company. The idea in question is to have them believe that he has become a settled man and the one way to do that is to get married. Reese has the perfect person in mind to be his wife, given the intended proposal will give her what she so desperately wants, her hotel. Soon, a marriage of convenience is struck between Merina and Reese, both determined to put up the necessary show for the board of directors so that in they end they both get what they want. But along the way, the need to act as a couple madly in love starts to fade as feelings for one another start to surface, making this marriage into something more than just a cover with an intended mutual end between both parties.
If I had to describe Merina and  Reese’s relationship in the beginning of this book it is like fire meets ice. One of the thing I absolutely loved about Merina  is how dedicated she is to her family’s hotel and how she does not just lie down and take the news of it being sold to Crane Hotels. Her fire burns brightly from the very first chapter as she goes head to head with Reese all while being soaked from head to toe after walking to his hotel in the pouring rain. The fact that Merina does not even let the pouring rain deter her mission to get her hotel back made me admire her so much especially when she faces off against Reese. Reese for me came off just as Merina describes him, being cold-as-ice and it was Reese’s initial personality of being very standoffish and cold that caused me to not being able to fully connect with his character until about a third of the way into the book which also affected how I viewed his connection with Merina. I could tell that there was definitely something between the two of them but it took some prodding especially from Reese’s publicist which impacted my feelings towards how their relationship and story was going to unfold.
Despite the slow start, there was no doubt that these two weren’t meant for one another because the heat between them definitely grew. Fire plays a huge role in this book because it is represented in many different ways and not just to signify the intense connection that is blooming between Reese and Merina. I loved how this theme was used throughout the book especially in regards to the Van Heusen Hotel and  how Merina herself views it as she has a permanent reminder of it in the form of a tattoo rightfully placed on her heart. As the sparks between Merina and Reese became more and more apparent, it was the banter back and forth between the two of them that really sold it for me. Their banter, sometimes lighthearted and playful and other times of a more sexual nature, had me laughing out loud several times and grinning from ear to ear. It was these scenes in the book when you could see both of them beginning to open up and care for one another while also wanting to jump each other’s bones that made me fall in love with them and their story.
If you are looking for a romance with intense fiery passion, strong-minded, driven characters, and adorable banter, then you should definitely check out The Billionaire Bachelor. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Synopsis:
Allie Carmichael has always believed life is simple.

You’re born. You live. You die.
She has no cause to believe that equation works differently for her, but there has to be a reason the world treats her like a pariah.

When an unexpected move to Kelleys Island brings Aidan McBrien crashing into her life, Allie is thrown by his reaction. He doesn’t shrink from her touch. He doesn’t stutter or make a quick exit. He smiles and welcomes her into his circle of friends, who aren’t exactly comfortable with Allie, but they seem to get her in a way most people don’t.

Finally, Allie has a real shot at normal and rides that high right up to her sixteenth birthday when she wakes in agony—an experience Aidan insists they have all faced. She struggles in ignorance, uncertain of what is real and what isn’t. When she emerges, Allie is different. She has always been different, but even among her extraordinary friends, she and Aidan are special.

As Allie struggles to maintain her tenuous grasp on the power that threatens to overwhelm her, she worries she will lose herself in this strange new world. A dangerous world where she will have to fight tooth and nail to defend the power and freedom that is her birthright.

…only Allie hates to fight.

Review

We all have a fairly clear idea of how our lives play out. In the simplest of terms, we’re born, we live, and then we die. But what if you found out that the normal rules of life do not apply to you, in fact you will continue to live on long after many people have died. Essentially, you find out you are an Immortal. How do you think you would react? What if you sensed it all along based purely on how others reacted to you when you were around them or the fact that you seemed to move a lot when people got too close to you and your family? These are basically the thoughts Allie has before and after she finds out she is in fact an Immortal. Of course, finding out this life altering secret does not happen easily especially not in Allie’s case, she has been isolated from this world for the majority of her life as her adoptive parents have moved all over the world in order to keep her safe. It is only on her 16th birthday that she experiences what it truly means to be an Immortal as she goes through what is called her “Awakening” which is basically a very painful process in which her powers emerge. Afterwards, she begins to fully see life for what it is as an Immortal. It definitely helps that Aidan McBrien and his family is at her side when this happens because without them she would have been helpless in knowing how to make through her “Awakening” not to mention the rest of her life.
The overall concept revolving around the idea of Immortals and the powers they possess and how they have been around for thousands if not millions of years is very unique seeing as I have not read a fantasy book like this before. The beginning part of the book did start out a little confusing to me as it seems like things progressed fairly quickly between Allie and Aidan and his friends when she arrived on Kellen’s Island after living in New Zealand for the past two years. You are definitely left wondering why Allie’s life is the way it is and why, for example, people seem to be uncomfortable around her, flinching each time she comes into contact with them. I understand that it is meant to leave the reader intrigued therefore causing them to continue to read to figure out why this happening but for me I just felt a little too lost. I get that there was an air of mystery since Allie also does not know what is going on but after a while I just wanted there to be some insight of what was happening and the world that Allie was  about to a part of. The building of the world encompassed in the novel is a crucial part of a fantasy book for me and this one left me more lost than curious.
I will say once we did find out the world that Allie is thrust into and the history behind it, I really liked the concept of being Immortal and having these abilities/unique powers which traced back all the way to beginning of time. Also, the fact that she and Aidan and everyone else stops aging is a major perk in my book. In addition to that, Allie and Aidan’s relationship is another aspect of the book I enjoyed just because it was almost like you could feel the connection they had from the very first time they literally ran into one another in the woods. Allie’s ability of being very perceptive of people and who they are as a person accounts for why in the book she becomes such good friends with Aidan, Sasha, Chloe, Graham, etc. almost instantaneously. I was a little thrown off by it at first just because it felt rushed to me but after finding out about this instinct Allie has and how it is connected her being an Immortal it all began to make sense. Which brings me back to Aidan, and how from the minute they met Allie felt she could trust him, allowing them to become best friends almost overnight.Their sarcastic banter back and forth along with how caring and protective Aidan is of Allie was so much fun to read about and definitely was a positive element within the book.
If you are looking for a unique fantasy involving powers/abilities and the inability to age along with a budding yet almost electric romance then I would definitely suggest you check out Emerge by Melissa A. Craven.

**I received an advanced copy of this book from Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review.**

Synopsis:
Taren needs a do-over. She’s decided the best way to put the high school bullies behind her is to pledge a Taylor-Swift-lip-syncing, beer-guzzling, sorority. Sisterhood helps Taren find the acceptance she’s always craved, but not the love she needs.

Alec wants freedom. To escape his father’s iron fist and unrealistic expectations, he pledges a campus acrobatics club where he finds that drugs and alcohol aren’t the only ways to get high. His addiction to danger helps him gain his independence, but it comes at a heavy price.

When the two cross paths, Alec fears his undeniable attraction to the party girl just might threaten everything he’s worked so hard to earn. Taren hasn’t forgotten that Alec humiliated her back in high school, but she also can’t deny the chemistry they share.

Alec and Taren have nothing in common, but fate is bound and determined to bring them together. They know falling in love is a risk, and yet it’s too hard to ignore. When their worlds clash and they both end up suffering, will they fight to stay together? Or are some pledges too hard to keep?

Review
College is a place where one can start over and become an entirely new version of themselves separate from who they were in high school. That is exactly what Taren wanted to do when she began her freshman year and it seemed to be going wonderfully as she met new friends and was even persuaded to rush a sorority. Of course, that came to a bit of a screeching halt when she saw the one person from her past life she didn’t want to see, Alec Hart. Finding out the guy you had a crush on in high school who you thought was a good guy but who subsequently decided to embarrass you in front of the entire school when he rejected you goes to the same college as you is the last thing that Taren wanted. And on Alec’s end the feeling was entirely mutual due to the fact that he thought she was the reason the second half of his senior year of high school was ruined. Little did they know the chance encounters they had their freshman year would lead to so much more.
This was an absolutely adorable new adult romance that brought me back to college making me miss it even more than I do now especially since this is the kind of romance I wish I had the chance to experience when I was in college. Despite the ups and downs that Taren and Alec faced in the beginning of the novel it was totally worth it for what happened after they realized the other was not who they thought he/she was. The pacing of this novel and the unfolding of their romance was wonderful because not only were you let wondering when it was going to happen but you also got to see how each character developed as the story moves from their freshman year into their sophomore year of college.
My favorite aspect of Taren and Alec’s relationship was when it is compared to the red string of fate which is something that Alec is learning about in one of his classes. I loved this comparison because it brought depth to their relationship as well as allowed the reader to see how all relationships could be seen in this concept. It is even expanded to encompass the relationship that Taren builds with William as part of her sorority’s philanthropy project. This overall idea that you are connected to a person no matter what happens in life by this red string therefore meaning that at some point your lives will cross again was just a profound idea to me and having it woven into the story made me connect with the characters that much more.
Overall, there was an authenticity to the book in regards to the college life that was depicted that, when mixed with this, at some times, all-consuming romance just made this book so attention grabbing for me. Despite what happens along the way with Taren and Alec and the obstacles they must overcome both individually and as a couple, you can’t help but hope that regardless of the pledges they made to the other aspects of their college lives they are still able to uphold the pledge that they come to make with one another. This is such a sweet and adorably cute romance that allows you to continue to believe in the power that love holds when you find the one you are meant to be with even if it happens to coincide with the best 4 years of your life: college.

The number of times I have laughed out loud or smiled while reading this book should give you some kind of indication of just how much I enjoyed it. Having previously read the first book in Anna Bank’s Syrena Legacy (I will be finishing that series ASAP lol), I knew I was in for a treat and she did not disappoint me one bit. How to Lose a Bachelor is witty, hilarious, adorable, and just down right cute at times, making it a wonderfully quick read of the second chance romance between Rochelle and Grant. Plus add in the “The Bachelor” style reality show setting and you got your own little mini drama on the side which is always fun to watch, or in this case read about.
Rochelle Ransom is a no holds bar attorney who has worked her butt off to get herself on track to becoming partner in a few years. In addition to that, she spends what little time is left over from her job as a corporate attorney doing pro bono work for Helping Hands, a shelter that helps battered women get their lives back together as the trauma they have experienced. This is her real passion which is why she decides to go on Luring Love in the first place, not to find “true love” but to win and convince the bachelor to give her his share of the prize money to put towards getting Helping Hands a state of the art facility for the women at the shelter. It is also a matter that is near and dear to her heart seeing as she watched her father abuse her mother when she was younger before he was sent away to prison because of it. Rochelle, or Chelle which is Grant’s nickname for her, is feisty, determined, a little stubborn, but totally lovable. It was so much fun watching her pull her antics on Luring Love after she finds out Grant is the bachelor, doing whatever it takes to get revenge on him for how he broke her heart almost ten years earlier when they were dating back in college. It is even more entertaining to see that despite her efforts of revenge, Rochelle slowly starts to fall for Grant again causing you to root for their second chance romance as the novel progresses.
And then you have Grant Drake, who gets the shock of his life when he sees Rochelle as one of the contestants on Luring Love where he is the bachelor that all the girls are trying to win. Grant decided to become the bachelor with the help from his friend Chris who happens to be the host on the show in order to try and get over the woman he is still in love with even after he broke up with her in college. Of course, things do not necessarily go as planned seeing as the woman he is still in love with just so happens to be one of the contestants aka Rochelle. Still hurt from finding out that Rochelle was going to choose going to law school at Berkeley over being with him back in college, Grant also uses this opportunity to get some vengeance on her. Obviously, one can see that both of their plans will lead to something more than just revenge but hey, props to them for trying lol. Besides being the bachelor, Grant is also a tactical training consultant which means he provides training for people in ways to defend themselves in case they are attacked. It is definitely kismet that both he and Rochelle do work that revolve around helping people who have either been attacked or who want to be able to prevent themselves from being attacked again whether that is learning self-defense skills or turning towards a shelter to help them rebuild their life. I really admired how much Grant cared about this topic in his own way especially after he saw what it did to Rochelle when they were dating in college.
Given the circumstances and the motives of both Rochelle and Grant, one can only assume that things on the show did not go smoothly. As both try to get back at one another, they are also met with the feelings they had way back when for one each other which makes you hope that in some way they will reconcile and, in the end, get back together. The fire and passion between Rochelle and Grant is still there, made evident during one of the challenges on the show where the women had to come up with a booth at a charity event and try to raise the most money to go towards a cause that helps battered women. Rochelle’s idea of having an old-fashioned kissing booth pays off in more ways than one solidifying your hope for them to realize their love for one another is still there and, to therefore put aside their need for vengeance against one another.
If you love witty banter, crazy antics that come with the territory of being on a “The Bachelor” style reality show, and above all else a passionate as well as an adorably cute second chance romance, then look now further and pick up How to Lose a Bachelor by Anna Banks. You will not be disappointed, I promise you that!

Review: Back to Us

BtUBack to Us by Theresa Roman
Release Date: July 28th, 2015
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Format: Ebook
Where You Can Find It: Amazon | Goodreads

**I received an advanced copy of this book from Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review.**

Synopsis:  Abandoned by her parents at fourteen, Jessica knows what it means to struggle. She’s vowed that getting her degree is the only thing she has time for, until a summer internship brings Justin into her life.

But Justin has scars of his own. A tour of duty in Afghanistan has left him with wounds. A medical discharge from the Navy leaves Justin struggling to make sense of his new reality. Then he meets Jessica; but can the two of them leave their pain in the past and make a future together?

Fighting for want you want despite the hardships you have faced is definitely the over-arching theme in this novel. Both Jess and Justin have been hit hard by what life has decided to throw at them and yet they keep on going after what they want or doing what they are passionate about. You learn very early on just how strong and determined Jess had to be once her parents abandoned her and she was put in the system. She got into college where her focus now went to finishing and earning her degree in the hopes of becoming a teacher afterwards. That focus leads her to her internship at the community center where she crosses paths with Justin, the basketball coach, and in that moment her plan for the future shifts dramatically.
Though you do not realize the degree of hardships Justin has had to face until it is revealed in the novel which, was a complete shock to me and definitely brought an unexpected element to the story that I quickly embraced, he is also fighting to maintain the normalcy of his life after what has happened. Of course that normalcy is shattered once he and Jess meet and slowly start to get close to one another. His fears and insecurities of how he will be perceived by Jess when she finds out the extent of his injuries leads him to first fight against his feelings for her. That of course is a lost cause as the two become closer and closer, resulting in them accepting what has happened to each one another in their pasts as well as between them as the novel progresses. Never giving up the fight for one another after all the obstacles and issues that arise, Jess and Justin are finally able to be together, the “us” they were from the very beginning.
Stepping into Jess’s shoes and taking in the full extent of what happened to her when she was a teenager allows you to see just how strong she is. Her parents ABANDONED her when she was 14, they just left and went back to Croatia neglecting her and her brother Mike because they saw them as burdens. That and the fact that afterwards, Jess was put in the foster system where she lived in a group home until she moved into the dorms for college is unbelievable because despite that hardship Jess was still able to move forward into college where her focus was turned towards getting her degree. Her determination and fortitude is so admirable you couldn’t help but rally behind Jess hoping she would finally get what she wanted after all she has been through.
With the degree of struggles and obstacles that both Jess and Justin have faced it is not surprising to find that this novel is definitely full of emotions. Jess and Justin’s romance begins slowly and is adorable to read but their relationship is not immune to certain factors that lead to it hit a few bumps, some larger than others, along the way. *SPOILERS* Justin’s injuries and how he is a double amputee, having lost both his legs from below the knee due to an IED when he was in Afghanistan, definitely kicks things up a notch on the emotional scale. Not only did it completely surprise me but it also allowed me to look past Justin as someone who has a disability and see him how Jess saw him from the very beginning. By revealing the extent of his injuries a little later in the novel, you are able see him as this guy who is sincere and caring towards Jess and not as someone who lost his legs while overseas in Afghanistan. I really appreciated that reveal because it definitely allowed me to look past what has happened to Justin and focus more on his relationship with Jess.
Despite all this, there were a few things with this book that did not sit right with me. The pacing of the novel felt a little off to me especially when at times it seemed like things happened just a little too fast between Jess and Justin in regards to the unfolding of their relationship. Also, though I am glad of how Justin’s character turned out at the end of the novel, his issues and insecurities reared their ugly head a few too many times to the point that I found him to be a little annoying and just a tad too protective of Jess.
