EXCERPT

When I finally plucked up a bit of courage, I peeped out of the curtains to see Kieran throwing stones at the window.

“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair,” he mock shouted, when he caught my eye. I opened the window to whisper loudly back at him.

“Are you high?” I asked. “Why didn’t you just ring the doorbell or call me?”

“I thought this would be more romantic,” he said.

“If I ignore the fact that my nipples probably have frostbite, I am feeling romanced,” I replied. He looked pained. “What’s wrong?” I asked.

“You said ‘nipples’ and now I can’t think of anything else,” he replied, making me smile.

“Now I’m down here, what’s the chances of seeing an accidental nip slip?” he asked.

“Depends,” I replied.

“On what?” he asked.

“What’s in the bag?” I said.

“Hot chocolate and warm doughnuts,” he said, holding up the bag as if to barter.

“Well, I would have said slim to none, but fresh doughnuts might have just tipped the odds in your favour,” I replied.

“Yesss!” he said, fist bumping the air in victory.

I closed the window and ran to buzz him in. He bounded up the stairwell, his heavy footsteps echoing loudly in the hallway. When he got to my door, he looked me up and down, taking in my short royal blue, silk pyjamas. Dropping the sack, he speared his hands into my hair and pulled me into a kiss that had me melting. Kier didn’t kiss with just his lips; he did it with his whole body. Without shoes on, I was tiny in comparison, but inside of the cage of his huge arms, I felt protected and safe. Despite his size, his lips were so gentle. He didn’t treat me like I was fragile, but like I was precious, as though every touch was one that he was experiencing for the first time and memorizing for later.

Feeling bold, I traced the seam of his mouth with my tongue, and when he parted his lips and touched his tongue against mine, I groaned. Every sensation was too much, and not enough. Breathless, he pulled away from me to nuzzle his face in the crook of my neck. I reached up and gently stroked the short hair at the back of his neck, making him sigh.

I still cannot believe that I get to review one of my all-time favorite series that have been newly edited and got some gorgeous looking covers as well. This is the first romance series that I fell in love with and that cemented my love for Carly Phillips. I hope you enjoy this smoking hot sports romance series as much as I do!

Note: I will be giving brief reviews for each book since there are four in the series as to not make this post a million miles long lol. Keep in mind there will be some spoilers

Hot Stuff

Hot Stuff (Book 1)

He’s about to find out …  She’s not just one of the guys.

Annabelle Jordan and her two sisters were orphans in frilly dresses when they went to live with their sports-lawyer uncle in his world of locker rooms, bookies and gambling. Now the girls are publicists in their uncle’s firm, The Hot Zone.

Despite her upbringing, Annabelle is all woman. She’s naturally drawn to real men—like her latest client, businessman and former football legend Brandon Vaughn.

The chemistry is potent, undeniable, irresistible. Annabelle soon realizes that Brandon is much more than just another jock. And that she’d better hold on tight if she doesn’t want to lose her heart.

I hate to play favorites especially with a series that is near and dear to my heart BUT Hot Stuff is my favorite book in the Hot Zone series. This was either my fourth or fifth time reading it and it brought back all the feelings I had when I read it back when I was 16. Annabelle and Brandon are just adorable together but they also bring the heat as their resistance to working alongside one another, because of their obvious attraction, does not last long once they are alone up in Brandon’s hometown. And even before that happens we get great bickering back and forth moments where their butting heads with one another just causes the sexual tension to build and build and build.

Though the bickering and butting heads moments are thoroughly entertaining and definitely lead to some hot moments in the bedroom, one element of the story  really pulled on the heartstrings for me and brought forth a topic not usually talked about in romance novels. Brandon has dealt with a learning disability all his life that made things difficult in high school leading him to focus on something he was good at which was football. He overcame his obstacles thanks to some help from his agent but it caused him to have a very strained relationship with his parents who did not view him as being good enough in their eyes. Brandon dealing with his parents throughout the story was hard to read because they still view him as the kid who didn’t do well enough in school and not as the uber successful football player that he has become. When Brandon admits what he views as his flaw to Annabelle, it was the most heartwarming moment of the book because it sets up the beginning of their relationship as one that is more than just having fun.

If you like characters that bicker and challenge one another causing heaps and heaps of sexual tension, a cast of entertaining and lovable side characters, and a bit of a mystery, then you will love Hot Stuff.

Hot Number
Book 2

Micki Jordan is a tomboy as much at home on the playing field as in a locker room full of naked guys.

But the star publicist is looking to prove she’s also an irresistible woman in order to get a second shot at professional baseball player and major league playboy, Damian Fuller.

Micki transforms herself into one hot number Damian can’t help but notice and together they burn up the sheets and find themselves falling hard. Until Damian’s past returns, threatening their future.

Good Ole Micki, just one of the guys. That is how Micki Jordan has felt for most of her life. And for good reason considering she spent most of her childhood in a locker room following her Uncle Yank around. She never felt like she could relate to her sisters and be girlie. That was all fine and good until it began to get a bit old and that was before she kissed Damian Fuller at a New Year’s Eve party. Now this tomboy wants to be seen as more than just one of the guys especially to Damian. And boy does she get her wish when things get a little crazy on a trip to Florida acting as Damian’s publicist. Let’s just say it involves a mix up in the drink order, a strip club, and Micki showing Damian just how much she is not one of the guys. Intrigued? Well this little incident, which is extremely entertaining to read, leads to Micki and Damian escaping to his vacation home on an island off of the Florida Keys ALONE. I don’t think I need to explain what happened while they were there, only that it was hilarious to read Damian’s reactions when Micki decides this is the perfect opportunity to make her move.

Micki and Damian’s moments together on the island were adorable, steamy, and very real but when they come back from the island the storyline shifts more to the side characters and what is happening between them, mainly the debacle that is Uncle Yank and Lola’s relationship. While I enjoyed reading about these characters because you just can’t help but fall in love with them as you see their storylines progress from the first book, I did feel like the focus on Micki and Damian’s relationship was pushed aside a bit too much for my liking. I realized how much I enjoyed the beginning part of this book much more than I did the middle moving into the end. Overall though the ending was worth the wait, even if there were quite a few obstacles before we could get there, and I adored Micki and Damian’s story just as much as did the first time I read it.

Out of all the sisters, I knew I was going to relate to Sophie the most just because she is described as always having her nose in a book when she was younger. Now all grown up she is “the smart sister” who uses her need for knowledge as a way to control everything in her life. Everything in her life is planned out and that includes her relationships, which under no circumstances will ever be with a client as Sophie doesn’t do athletes. The only person who seems to be an exception to this rule is Riley Nash. He purposefully goes out of his way when he comes to the office to flirt with her, making it harder and harder for her to resist the building attraction she has for the man. Now that is all going to change when they are both after the same thing: finding Spencer Atkins. Sophie needs to find Spencer because of business reasons since the merger between his sports agency and Uncle Yank’s and Riley needs to find Spencer for a more personal reason. Their pursuit leads them to Florida to question his sisters if they know of his whereabouts.

Florida provides both Sophie and Riley with some answers but it also reveals one very important thing and that is their feelings for one another. But Riley has a lot going on in his personal life between his business with Spencer and dealing with his teenage daughter who knows daddy will give her whatever she wants if she asks. This novel like the previous one featuring Micki’s story also has a bunch of side characters and there are times when they take over the story leaving Sophie and Riley’s time together off to the side. While I absolutely loved Sophie and Riley especially Riley with his bad boy ways and Southern accent, it did seem like they weren’t getting enough of the spotlight in my opinion. But I guess that is what you have to realize as you continue on in this series because the storylines of the side characters continue to progress even if the love stories change with each book. While it did get annoying for me sometimes I love the side characters just as much so it wasn’t all bad in the end.

Hot Property

Hot Property
Book 4

Just one short season ago, major league center fielder John Roper had it all: the looks—and personal life—of a sports hero and the public’s adoration. But this hot property’s lucky streak has run out. After a World Series disaster, fans diss him, shock jocks mock him and his dysfunctional family hassles him for money he really can’t spare.

Now it’s up to him, and Hot Zone publicist Amy Stone, to get his life back on track.

Amy finds it’s easier said than done. What with the constant intrusions of his nutty family, a crazed fan playing stalker, and Roper’s refusal to put his own needs first, she’s starting to think that life in the fast lane isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. But when the two retreat to a secluded lodge, the sexy center fielder throws Amy a curveball—one she never saw coming…

The lovable John Roper finally gets his own story as well as his own HEA and I am so happy! John Roper is a client at Athletes Only and Hot Zone as well as Micki’s best friend. He is first introduced in Micki’s book, Hot Number, and then pops up in Hot Item as well but now it is his turn to find the love of his life. Only he doesn’t make a very good first impression when he comes onto Amy Stone at her cousin Riley’s wedding when he already brought another women as his date. Not a very good move John! It is not until a month later after Amy moves to New York for her new job as a publicist at Hot Zone that they meet again. Not only is the attraction still there but it is hotter than ever which makes things a little complicated when Roper is assigned as Amy’s first client.

Amy is so so sweet and new to the world of being a publicist to a professional athlete completely taken aback by the attention that they get especially Roper who has been under some heat for his poor performance last season. Not only is she juggling getting acclimated to this new life style, she is also trying to juggle her feelings for Roper while trying to be professional as his publicist. Add Roper’s demanding family constantly needing him to solve their problems and she has more than enough to deal with. With Roper’s family added into the mix, this book like the others in the series has a whole cast of side characters which definitely add to the drama. Especially the point of view that pops up of the person who is trying to ruin Roper’s career. While these side characters and storylines definitely take time away from the main couple, Amy and Roper, they add a lot to the story further expanding on the world that Carly Phillips has created over the course of these four books.

Derek West and Cassie Storm have a past. Once upon a time she was the rich, popular girl and he was the gardener’s son whose parents worked for her and her family. Despite the differences between them, they shared a small, intimate moment the summer before they went off to college that spoke of promise. That is, until it all came crashing down the next day when Derek overheard Cassie and her friends admitting that he may be totally fuckable but he was not the boy you bring home to your parents. Assuming he had seen Cassie’s true colors as the quintessential rich girl and wanting nothing of it, Derek went off to college focusing on his passion for computers instead. Fast forward ten years and Derek West is one third of the billion dollar tech company that created the popular app, Blink. He may have been the gardener’s son in the past but now he is one of the most sought after person in the tech world. And one of those people hoping to get a moment of Derek’s time is none other than Cassie Storm. Oh how the tables have turned.

Cassie has been working her butt off at her family’s company determined to make her late grandfather proud by to become CEO of the company when her father decides to step down. Unfortunately that opportunity is ripped away from her when her father annouces that her brother, who has been jet setting around Europe for the past year and therefore has had no experience working for the family business, is given the presitigious title instead. Heartbroken by the decision, Cassie lets her disappointment and hurt fuel her determination to show her father that she is still worthy by landing THE interview that will make their company’s tech magazine one everyone will be talking about. That coveted interview Cassie desperately needs? You guessed it, Derek West.

Things get a little more difficult when Derek doesn’t initially agree to the interview as he has a firm policy not to let anybody know about his past and how he got to where he is today. Especially when the person asking reminds him vividly of how her family ruined his family’s life. Did I forget to mention that Cassie’s father accused Derek’s mother who was the Storm family’s maid at the time of stealing a diamond necklace and then had her arrested. This lead to the family being fired, thus losing their home and their health insurance, which made things especially hard when Derek’s father got cancer, leaving them unable to get him the care he needed in time resulting in his father’s death. At least that is how Derek has seen it for the past 10 years. But what Derek didn’t bet on is that A) his feelings for Cassie still existed and were still as strong as they were 10 years ago, and B) for him to be wrong about Cassie being the stuck-up rich girl he thought she was all those years ago.

The one thing I loved about this book was how Cassie did not take any of the crap Derek threw at her. Derek still has a lot of resentment and anger towards the Storm family after what happened and there are time when it affects his behavior when he is around Cassie as if he holds her responsible for what her father did. But Cassie doesn’t allow this behavior to stand and on more than one occasion calls Derek out on it and makes it perfectly clear she is not going to stand for it. I absolutely LOVED those moments because it shows you how strong she is as a women especially when she has been proving herself almost her entire life when it comes to her family and their company.

“I’m not giving up on the interview. But you should think about whether or not you want to see me outside of a working relationship. Because I don’t want to deal with the snide remarks and sudden change of temperature when something you don’t like comes up.”

Derek had a lot to work through over the course of this book as he tries to move past his feelings about the Storm family so that it does not interfere with his relationship with Cassie. Then when the truth of the incident that caused his family so much pain, at least in his eyes, comes to light Derek must learn to accept what has happened in the past in order for him to have a future with Cassie. I really enjoyed the journey Derek went on because he had so much loyalty to his family that it blinded him a bit because it allowed for his anger towards the Storm family to remain and grow as he got older. It was this second chance with Cassie that allowed him to not only find love but also learn to accept what has happened in the past and, in a way, forgive those involved.

While there is a lot of emotion in this book, there is also a lot of heat as well so if you are looking for a second chance romance that encompasses both, I definitely suggest you check out Going Down Hard and the other books in this series.

Blog Tour + Review: Hooked by Christina Phillips

Hooked
Viking Bastards MC #1
By: Christina Phillips
Releasing Feb 6th, 2017
Entangled Scorched

unknown-13Zach…

I like my sex dirty and disposable. I’m not into commitment or chicks who want more than one night. My brothers and club come first, second and last.

Until she walks into my life. Classy, rich and so out of my league it’s crazy. A week together should get her out of my system, but this good girl is so bad when we’re all alone and I can’t get enough of her.

I don’t do forever, but she’s hooked me so bad I don’t ever want to let her go. Except there’s no way a princess can live in my world and I sure as hell won’t live in hers…

Let me start off by saying that I wasn’t as “hooked” (pun intended) as I thought I would be after finishing this book. I was definitely hooked by the fact it was a biker romance as those have become one of my favorite romance genres (thank you Sons of Anarchy) but overall this book did not live up to the expectations I had for it.

Grace Mulholland’s life is all up in the air after she decides to break off her engagement to her boyfriend of four years. She is on her way to start a new chapter in her life when her car breaks down. Add the fact that her cellphone is dead as well and Grace is in a bit of a pickle as she finds herself in a part of Los Angeles she has never been before. Oh and it is raining so you know everything is working in her favor at this point. Her best bet of finding a phone is the bar, Odin’s, across the street that looks less than friendly. Armed with her umbrella, she makes her way into the bar and get a lot more than she bargained for when she meets Zach Reynolds.

“I can’t tear my gaze away as the sexiest fucking redhead I’ve ever seen strolls across the bar as though she owns it.”

With those words alone, you get a sense that Zach is not the typical guy Grace is used to. A biker to his core he says what he means and takes what he wants making him extremely sexy in my eyes. He also has that effect on Grace as their initial meeting is full of sexual tension as Grace decides to indulge in this bad boy seeing as she is now free to experience what she wants without her fiancé approval. The back room of the bar is when things really heat up and it doesn’t stop there. From then on the two who are complete opposites down to the core decide to engage in a casual hook-up with one another. It may have started out hot and heavy and more on the purely physical side but soon Grace and Zach begin to feel more. Hearts get mixed up in it, which was not part of the deal as Zach in particular does not do relationships.

I really enjoyed Zach and Grace as a couple. They were complete opposites with Grace being the heir to a hotel chain and Zach being part of a MC who works on cars for a living but they still clicked. Zach plays the big bad biker role well but it is obvious underneath him is just a man who misses how his parents, cares for his siblings a lot, and keeps love at arms length. Grace surprised me with the bit of backbone she starts to form throughout the book, speaking her mind to Zach at times when it is not the most comfortable as well as bringing on the sass which leads to some adorable and steamy moments between the two. I also loved her dreams of moving past her life working for her family. I would have never guessed she wanted to be a baker which was a great twist to her character.

While Zach and Grace’s story was a joy to read, there were a few things that deterred me from truly loving this book. I realize that the relationship with Zach and Grace starts out purely physical and is therefore suppose to be temporary but I felt that the overall timeline of their relationship in this book was too rushed. The pacing was too quick for me in some parts especially when the storyline hints at another intimate moment between Zach and Grace and instead of giving the readers that moment in detail it is fast forwarded to the next day and basically summarized. I guess I was a little greedy but this happened at least twice and both times I wanted to see those moments between Zach and Grace making me just a tad bit frustrated.

Another part of the book that I wish was expanded upon was the moments into the MC that Zach is a part of, the Viking Bastards. Yes, this is a biker romance but there is not enough scope into the biker aspect that you sometimes forget that Zach is even a part of it. I get that Zach was trying to shield Grace from that part of his life but I honestly think her being introduced to it would have added to the storyline more. My hope is that we get more of a view into the MC in the other books in this series.

Overall, I think this was a good start to this series. While I didn’t absolutely love it, we did get introduced to a number of secondary characters that I can only assume will get their own stories in the other books in this series which I am looking forward to. One in particular I am hoping for is Zach’s sister, Kat and his best friend, Cade. We will have to see though.

If you enjoy biker romances that are hot and steamy but pack in some heart as well, then check out Hooked by Christina Phillips.

February TBR 2017

It’s a new month! Which means… it’s time to make a new very ambitious TBR because I don’t do short TBR lists. I JUST. DON’T. It’s not my thing.

It is also February which makes me automatically think of Valentine’s Day which means romance AKA my favorite genre 🙂 If you didn’t already guess it, there will a LOT of romance books on this TBR. I am a hopeless romantic and it comes out SUPER strong in February because of Valentine’s Day.

I have to read a number of books for one of my classes so those will probably be my non-romance books in this TBR but hey who doesn’t love variety. I do, I swear. Romance is just my first love.

So I have somewhere around 21 books that I want to read this month which is beyond excessive/ambitious considering I have readings to do for my classes as well as assignments to complete but hey this is what happens when your are a bookworm/book blogger/wish you had all the time in the world to read. It’s totally normal.

Books For Class
  1. Goodbye Stranger by Rebecca Stead
  2. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
  3. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
  4. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe By Benjamin Alire Saenz
  5. Witches: The Absolutely True Tale of Disaster on Salem by Rosalyn Schanzer
  6. Popular: How a Geek in Pearls Discovered the Secret to Confidence by Maya Van Wagenen
Library Books

7.  Frostblood by Elly Blake
8.  Caraval by Stephanie Garber
9.  You Don’t Know My Name by Kristen Orlando
10. Mr. President by Katy Evans
11. Royally Screwed by Emma Chase
12. The Goal by Elle Kennedy

Netgalley/Blog Tours

13. Hooked by Christina Phillips
14. Royal Affair by Parker Swift
15. Going Down Hard by Carly Phillips

Bookshelf

16. Hot Stuff by Carly Phillips (Hot Zone #1)
17. Hot Number by Carly Phillips (Hot Zone #2)
18. Hot Item by Carly Phillips (Hot Zone #3)
19. Hot Property by Carly Phillips (Hot Zone #4)
20. How to Handle a Heartbreaker by Marie Harte
21. Gilded Cage by Vic James

SO there is my TBR… I know what you are thinking. Is she crazy? Probably. Will I read all these books? That is the dream, probably not the reality. But as I like to look at it, it is a way for me to keep my options open.

Also, if you didn’t catch a reoccurring theme, I am planning on reading 5 of Carly Phillips’ books. The Hot Zone series will be a re-read for me in preparation for a blog tour in March but either way I am excited as she is one of my favorite romance authors. Re-reading is another theme and I am re-reading Fangirl for the second time and Diary of a Part Time Indian for the third time.

I would love to know what you have planned for this month. Are you as ambitious as I am? (Probably not lol)

Happy Reading!

January Wrap-Up

It’s hard to believe that the first month of 2017 is over!! It went by so fast, but I still managed to read 8 books this month even with starting up grad school again so I very happy with that.

So here is what I read this month:

  1. Rule Breaker by Harper Kincaid – 3.5/5 stars
  2. Heart Breaker by Harper Kincaid – 2/5 stars
  3. Girl Breaker by Harper Kincaid – 4/5 stars

I started the year off by reading a new series which is one of my reading goals for 2017. The Break on Through series by Harper Kincaid was a lot of fun to read, full of dominating men, a bit of drama, and a lot of heart. While I enjoyed the first and third books much more than the second, the series as a whole was entertaining as hell especially the third book which had my favorite couple Jessica and Max. As a series, I would give it a solid 3.5/5 stars. Plus, can I just say, those covers are gorgeous.

4.  The Troublemaker Next Door by Marie Harte – 3.5/5 stars

This is the first book in the McCauley Brothers series and I picked this up because I actually own the last three books in the series. My plan was to read the first two books so that I was able to read at least one book off of my bookshelf this month as that is another one of my reading goals but alas I only managed to read the first one. The Troublemaker Next Door was such a great introduction into this series as you meet each of the McCauley Brothers and start to fall in love with them. I can’t wait for the second book in the series because the girl who falls in love writes romance novels for a living.

5.  Big Shot by Carly Phillips and Erika Wilde – 4.5/5 stars

I was so excited to get my hands on this book because not only is one of my all time favorite authors, Carly Phillips, a co-author but after reading their Dirty Sexy series, I knew this duo would give me another hot romance to completely obsess over, and they did! This was my second favorite read of the month, further solidifying Carly Phillips as an auto-buy author for me. I can’t wait for the second book in the series.

6.  Dirty Dealers by Tia Louise – 3/5 stars

This book’s description is what had me jumping at the chance to participate in blog tour for it and while its story turned out to not be what I thought it would be it was still a wild ride involving drug lords, kidnapping, and a second chance romance. If this looks at all interesting to you, I definitely recommend you read the Dirty Players duet first as this is a sort of spin-off of that duology and its characters.

7. Heartbreaker by Stacey Kennedy – 5/5 stars

Ah, now for my favorite read of this month which also almost has an identical title to a book I read earlier in the month. While that title fell flat for me, Heartbreaker leapt off the page as I gave my heart to Maddox and Joss, more Maddox than Joss tbh. This is one steamy romance that grabbed me from the very first page and introduced me to another author who will be on my radar from now on. If you like your romance with a little kink in it, then definitely check this one out.

8. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton – 4/5 stars

My last read of the month was one for my teen collections class and it is a very well known classic as many people probably had to read it in high school. I was not one of those people so this was my first time reading it and I have to say I really enjoyed it. I didn’t know what to expect when I first started but as the story progressed I got more and more into the characters especially Ponyboy our narrator. I can see why this is such a beloved book and I am really interested to see how the movie compares to the book.

Overall, it was a solid first month reading wise. While I didn’t have many five star reads, I still read books that stayed with me in some way whether that was a character, a couple, or just a particular scene which is good enough for me. Plus I read 4 books that I were on my TBR. Of course, there were 14 on it in total but I am just going to forget that little detail…

Hope everyone else had a good reading month.

Now onto February…

“Bedroom eyes had been watching her most of the night, and Joss couldn’t take it anymore. She’d eye fucked him on the dance floor until he finally joined her, and she’d spent the last half an hour grinding into him in what he obviously read as an invitation.”

With an opening paragraph like that, you know the story that follows is going to be one hell of a read. And let me tell you, it was.

Ugh there are so many things to say about this book! The prologue alone sucked me in right away. The chemistry between Maddox and Joss when they first hook up in the bathroom at a nightclub was just SO. FREAKING. AMAZING. Maddox from the very beginning exuded confidence and an air of dominance that made my toes curl. He also had just the sexiest one liners in the prologue while him and Joss are getting much more “acquainted” with one another. The prologue definitely sets you up wondering what is going to happen next between these two since their hookup is meant to be a one time only thing as Maddox, of course, does not do the girlfriend thing.

Fast forward to a year later and fate, if you want to call it that, has brought them back together, only this time there is more at stake if they decide to pick up where they left off a year ago.

“Bedroom eyes stood at the front of the room behind a long table, addressing a group of ten police officers sitting in front of him.”

“Maddox Hunt. Police lieutenant. Total badass.”

I loved that Maddox was above Joss in rank because it just added to the whole “forbidden romance” vibe going on as both had something to lose if their relationship was discovered by their fellow officers. I also LOVED that both of them came from a family of cops because, for Joss in particular, it influenced her personality and how she handled people with very strong commanding presences like Maddox.

It was Joss’s strength that I really admired because it allowed her to accept what happened with her ex-boyfriend of 6 years, Nick the Prick, and move on. Sure, she had her heart broken but she didn’t exactly wallow over what was lost but more accepted that she would never become the person she was towards the end, someone without a voice, and vowed to never have that happen to her again. And it of course lead to her to Maddox, so it all worked out in the end.

While Joss was such a lovable, funny, trusting yet vulnerable character, it was Maddox that really stole the show for me. There is just something about him that I was drawn too. He honestly has just such a commanding presence it radiates off of the pages when you read this book. He oozes dominance as he goes after what he wants and takes what he wants. You learn that Maddox like his kink which I very much enjoyed but he also always made sure that Joss was comfortable and what they were doing was what she wanted which just added so much to his character. There are just so many facets to Maddox but I think it was his dealing with his mother’s abandonment and his father’s Alzheimer’s that really pulled at my heartstrings. He puts up such a good front, making it seem like he has accepted what life has thrown him when really he is still hurting and coping with his mother’s abandonment.

Something I found unique about this book is that while these two try and have a no-strings attached sexual relationship, it is initially Maddox who finds himself trying to reel in his feelings for Joss and not the other way around. Usually, it is the girl who realizes she is falling for the guy and tries to stop herself because she knows it will only end in heartbreak but this time it is the guy that first starts noticing these feelings more than the girl. Joss definitely has her moments in the book but it is Maddox’s small realizations that he is changing and not knowing how to stop it that was refreshing to see.

OK, I could gush about this book SO much more but I feel like you just need to read it and experience it for yourself.

If you want a romance with some kink that will definitely leave you hot and bothered but is also funny and has its heart-tugging moments, then pick up Heartbreaker by Stacey Kennedy. DO IT!! (I promise you won’t regret it.)

percy-klein

With all the suspense and mystery wrapped up in this story, unfortunately it fell a little flat for me. I will say there was definitely potential for me to like it more than I did but there seemed to be too many factors that hindered my reading experience of it.

For Logan Hunt, protecting people is what he does. His new post as guard for the queen regent is a task he is more than ready to undertake. But when the king himself tells Logan to take a few days off and recharge, something he is hesitant to do, Logan’s life is changed forever as it reunites him with Kass, or as he knew her Cassandra, his first love. Their second chance love story takes off from there but not without a few bumps in the road as Kass has secrets. Secrets that will threaten not only her relationship with Logan but also put the lives of others in danger.

Logan is first introduced in the Dirty Players Duet, which is a duology that focuses on Zelda, who is the queen regent’s sister and the king’s brother, Cal. For those who have read this duology, you will be well versed in this world from the very beginning. For those who haven’t, like myself, I definitely had a harder time understanding exactly what is going on. This was the biggest issue I had with this book because very early on I realized that it would have been better if I had read the Dirty Players Duet first because even though it says that this can be read as a standalone there is still a lot that you don’t fully understand as you are reading. This is ultimately why I had such a hard time getting into the story because I just felt like I was missing something.

As for the romance between Logan and Kass, it was rekindled fast which makes sense given that not too much time after that, obstacles rose up that threatened their relationship. While there were some steamy moments here and there, the bulk of Logan and Kass’s relationship was rooted in emotion as you are able to see through both of their points of view in every other chapter. The alternating chapters is something that really  enabled me to see just how much they affected one another especially during the more intense parts of the story. This aspect of the book really brought the romance to life for me as it seemed to sometimes get bogged down by the amount of mystery and suspense found within the rest of the book.

There was no short supply of suspenseful moments, which grabbed my attention and propelled me forward through this book as you see Kass’s decisions over the last few years come back to haunt her, threaten her relationship with Logan, and put other lives in danger. Tia Louise also did a really good job bringing an air of mystery to the book as there is a key element in regards to Kass’s character that is kept under wraps quite nicely until it is revealed later on in the story. I did not see that reveal coming nor did I consider it a possibility which only added more intrigue to how the rest of the story was going to unfold.

I think if I had read the Dirty Players Duet first, I would have enjoyed this book a lot more. With that being said though, the suspenseful and thrilling moments of this book kept me on the edge of my seat as you are left wondering whether or not Logan and Kass’s relationship would survive. If you interested in a thrilling second chance romance that is truly tested by the very end, then check out Dirty Dealers by Tia Louise.
